The Quilts of Gee’s Bend

“Some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.”   – New York Times

Like the common threads that connect us all, AT&T offers a variety of services to help deliver your world — from High Speed Internet and wireless to home phone service and Digital TV. Beyond bringing the pieces of your life together, we are also pleased to bring people together.

To commemorate Black History Month, we are unveiling a specially commissioned quilt that celebrates the spirit of African Americans and highlights the unique talents of the renowned Gee's Bend Quilters Collective.

The AT&T Gee's Bend Quilt, which measures 95 inches X 82 inches, was created by 46 members of the Collective and features colors based on the AT&T brand palette. These artists, ranging in age from 19 to 90, worked together for more than 250 hours to complete the artwork, which is destined to become a part of black cultural history. The quilt symbolizes the individuality of the quilters and their multi-generational approach to African American art and culture. Ultimately, the quilt will be donated to the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW).

First introduced by AT&T through an advertising campaign for broadband, the Gee's Bend Collective maintains a quilting style that has been passed down through six generations of African American quilters from rural Alabama. Their work has been recognized by such organizations as New York's Whitney Museum and the U.S. Postal Service. . As part of that campaign, AT&T also sponsored a three-city Gee's Bend Quilters Collective tour to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, featuring appearances by several quilters.

AT&T's long heritage of serving the African American community stems from the company's commitment to diversity at every level. The relationship with the Gee's Bend Collective is just the most recent effort. The company also invests in cultural events like San Antonio's "Beyond the Dream" celebration to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as being recognized with more than 20 notable diversity awards last year alone.

AT&T is offering free images of these cherished quilts for download. To show your support and develop a deeper relationship with this iconic cultural organization, select from any of the four images to enjoy as electronic wallpaper screen savers on your personal computer.
