Go To Market

AT&T has the flexibility to support a wide spectrum of business and functional support models, ensuring that you are ready to support the needs of your product, customers, and business. Device certification and wireless transport are two core-competencies that AT&T offers, but you can also utilize services related to end-user support, end-user billing, or branding that will shape the partnership into an AT&T retail model.

A business model's position is defined by the level of ownership and control both service elements and the customer.

Ownership & Control Level

Flexibility

A business model's position on the spectrum is defined by the level of ownership and control of both service elements and the customer. Partners who have a mature infrastructure may be best served by a traditional wholesale model. For those partners wishing to focus on their devices and platforms, AT&T can deliver a retail experience.

Distribution

Your distribution strategy will be driven in large part by your business model and targeted customer segment.

For business solutions, AT&T's channels include the VAR and Alliance Dealer channels and the AT&T direct sales force.

For consumer centric devices, we can review potential opportunities such as partner retail locations and AT&T's retail channels which include AT&T-owned retail stores and att.com.

We can help you find the best path for your product.

AT&T-Owned Retail Stores
2,200 company-owned stores, offering a wide range of solutions.

att.com
att.com is the most visited telecom company website with a robust sales portal.

Network

When determining which network to develop for, consider the following:

  • What is the range of coverage and support for roaming required?
  • How much data will the primary applications use? Will other network services be required?
  • How sensitive will the user be to slower delivery of data? Is latency an issue?
  • What is the required network speed?
  • Are there any network restrictions?
  • Is wireless transport limited to data or is voice a consideration?

The table below can help you make an accurate side-by-side comparison of each network's features and benefits.

Platforms

AT&T data service delivery platforms enable rapid, well-managed, large-scale wireless deployments for specialized personal and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices. This helps lower time and cost barriers, simplify the deployment lifecycle, and enable efficient operational management.

Keys to success include leveraging and utilizing the AT&T alliance ecosystem and using the global standard, GSM-based 3G and 2.5G data services. And success can be simpler with the AT&T Control Center.

Control Center

The AT&T Control Center enables enterprises, OEMs, solution providers and operators to capitalize on a world of connected devices by converging sophisticated wireless technologies with leading edge Internet applications delivered as a software service.

Connect to Our Network

For some messaging support and content delivery models, you will need to connect to our network. Connection requirements will vary based on your offering and anticipated sales volumes, and could engage up to four AT&T Mobility Data Centers (DC). Some additional considerations:

  • The preferred transport is an Internet Protocol Security (IPSec VPN)
  • To facilitate failover and dynamic path selection, Border Gateway Gateway (BGP) is configured over the IPSec tunnels
  • AT&T Mobility can forward RADIUS accounting records to your server. You need to let AT&T know if you require RADIUS accounting records and if you have a RADIUS server.
  • AT&T Mobility does not provide IP addressing for mobile devices. You will need enough private IP space in your network architecture.
  • You need to specify your Short Messaging Service (SMS) requirements, if any. (i.e. whether the device can originate an SMS message; whether the device only needs SMS wake-up; or whether the device needs two-way SMS capability.)

Once you have signed a contract and provided the necessary information, the provisioning time frame is six weeks. Following contract signature, an AT&T Solutions Engineer (SE) will work with you to gather data for SMS provisioning; data transport over the Commercial Connectivity Service infrastructure ( including information needed to provision the custom Access Point Name); and firewall requirements. Once this is complete, your AT&T Solutions Engineer will schedule a "Test and Turn Up" appointment.

Our design tools can shorten the path to realizing a great product. From our Mobile Broadband Accelerator program, Module Matching Tool, or AT&T Connection Kits – AT&T and our business partners are making it easier for you to build your success.

Certification

Once you've finalized your business relationship with AT&T, you'll want to begin preparing for device certification. Before your device can enter our test labs for Network Ready certification testing, devices must:

  • Complete FCC and PTCRB certification
  • Comply with E-911 regulations
  • Be a data-only device or data-with-voice device (no voice-only devices)
  • Include support for the 850 and 1900 bands
  • Include AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) support for voice devices
  • Incorporate an AT&T-certified radio module
  • Have support for ENS (Enhanced Network Selection)
  • Meet AT&T's minimum TIS/TRP RF performance requirements
  • Be submitted in the most current hardware, software, and firmware versions

Once these criteria are met you may submit your device for AT&T Network Ready certification. Currently, the device on-boarding tool is managed through devCentral, our developer program. Please note, additional certification beyond the AT&T Network Ready certification may be required, based on your product attributes and channels of sale.

Software Requirements

Some device types may have additional software requirements. If you are developing a notebook or a netbook, AT&T Communication Manager is a launch requirement. AT&T Communication Manager is an easy-to-use software that allows you to manage your connection to the AT&T mobile data network and to Wi-Fi networks. Communication Manager offers a range of features, such as:

  • Simple installation and intuitive user interface
  • Access to our EDGE and 3G networks and roaming partners' networks, where applicable
  • Provides easy authentication at AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots for customers who meet certain eligibility requirements
  • VPN-aware software that can help quickly establish connections for many of the leading VPNs (Virtual Private Networks)

Device On-Boarding Tool

If you have met the above requirements, you may submit your device for Network Ready testing. Our Device Onboarding Tool is currently managed through our developer program. To proceed:

1) If you are an AT&T Developer Program member, proceed to submittal.

Certification

AT&T's Mobile Broadband Accelerator (MBA) Program connects developers with certified module components to help smooth the development, testing, and certification processes. The wide range of approved modules includes 3G, 4G, 4GLTE, goes from entry level to advanced, and offers different form factors like LGA, surface mount, and PCIe.

And they are all available from industry leading suppliers, many of which offer favorable pricing to developers working with AT&T. Depending on the specific circumstances of your product, these suppliers may also provide free-of-charge engineering support to assist you in your development.

  • Compatible with a range of applications, including consumer electronics, M2M and computing devices
  • Lower cost, high performance module options
  • Powered by the nation's fastest mobile broadband network and complimented by world-class engineering support
  • 3G, 4G and 4GLTE options available

Connection Kit Image

Which kit is right for you? Depending on where you are in the development cycle, we have several options.

If you already have a working prototype, using an AT&T approved module, then the Benchmark kit is the right choice. Leverage the visibility in AT&T Control Center to troubleshoot your device's network performance, using the benchmark device as a baseline. Exceptional developer support, a benchmark device, and active test SIMs are all elements of the kit.

Are you in the design phase, and have yet to decide on an AT&T approved module? Then purchase one of our Module Kits. Several options are available from leading manufacturers, offering different form factors and capacities. Including modules, a test-cradle and module-specific developer tools, the Module Kit is the ideal vehicle to move your idea from the drafting board to production.

Additionally, consider selecting a Module Kit with access to the Axeda platform, which can help you to build enterprise-grade M2M applications faster. It lets you focus on application design - not plumbing - while supplying key features like condition monitoring, location based services, business rules, secure communication, and enterprise system integration.
