Exclusive: AT&T connects Timex® IRONMAN® One GPS+ fitness smartwatch
to its network

August 6, 2014

IRONMAN One GPS+ fitness smartwatch SALT LAKE CITY_Time and technology wait for no one - especially when you combine the two together.

Today at the Outdoor Retailer show here in Salt Lake City, iconic watchmaker Timex accelerated the connected fitness sector by announcing the Timex® IRONMAN® ONE GPS+ fitness smartwatch – the first sports watch with a cellular connection to AT&T's network.

Designed for fitness enthusiasts and runners, the implications of this are huge: You no longer have to carry your smartphone during your run or exercise routine. The watch’s access to the AT&T network allows the device to upload your running and exercise data to the web and share your workout with friends on popular social networks.

No more sideloading or connecting via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is needed. The IRONMAN® ONE GPS+ provides a robust experience when it connects to AT&T's mobility network using embedded HSPA technology.

And AT&T is the exclusive network provider for the watch. Providing a mobile cellular connection to wearable devices delivers more value for customers. IRONMAN® ONE GPS+ is a great example of how embedded cellular connectivity improves functionality and provides new benefits to smartwatch devices.

And for the first year, access to the AT&T network is included! Timex® IRONMAN® ONE GPS+ comes with one-year of data connectivity by AT&T included for U.S. and Canadian subscribers.

Timex IRONMAN® ONE GPS+ includes a series of game-changing features that appeal to fitness-minded individuals, including:
  • Full phone-free wireless connectivity and phone-free messaging capabilities
  • Ability to track speed, distance and pace in real-time and instantaneously share performance metrics through an online platform
  • Always-on, sunlight readable Qualcomm® Mirasol™ display for easy reading without breaking stride during fitness activities
  • Tracking capabilities that include a custom-built safety feature
  • Built-in MP3 component that stores and plays music
This new smartwatch - created by Timex using Qualcomm technology and AT&T connectivity - is a game changer for wearables and sets the pace for connected fitness devices.

Chris Penrose appeals to connected car app developers at SXSW V2V

July 14, 2014

Chris Penrose Blog LAS VEGAS _ AT&T enables independent application developers looking to bring a new level of innovation to connected cars, Senior Vice President Chris Penrose said at the SXSW V2V conference in Las Vegas.

Speaking on the panel "Forget the Flying Car, Just Get Me a Connected Car," Penrose said: "Hackathons geared toward app developers can open up capabilities and feature sets inside the car. In a controlled environment, we can tackle controls and solve for issues appropriate for the connected car environment. Apps need to be tailored to the connected car environment."

Penrose pointed out that AT&T would be holding a hackathon at the Super Mobility Week trade show in September for application developers to create apps using connectivity between the car and the home.

Penrose's Emerging Devices Organization earlier this year announced the creation of "AT&T Drive," the company's connected car platform – a modular, global solution that allows automakers to pick and choose what services and capabilities are important to them in order to differentiate their solutions in the marketplace. AT&T Drive allows automakers the ability to utilize or build their own services and join them with services from AT&T Drive, which helps create unique solutions for their end users.
