Efforts in Haiti

AT&T rallied company-wide support for assistance after the earthquake in Haiti.

AT&T rallied company-wide support for assistance after the earthquake in Haiti. Not only did the company provide monetary donations to organizations working in the country, AT&T implemented a number of programs and initiatives to answer the call for help:

  • Text to Donate: AT&T launched an initiative allowing wireless customers to text donations to the Red Cross for earthquake victims in Haiti using their AT&T mobile devices. AT&T customers pledged more than $12.3 million to the Red Cross fund.
  • Waiving Wireless Charges for Haitian Customers: AT&T bolstered support for relief workers in Haiti by waiving wireless usage charges for customers in Haiti who make/receive voice calls, use wireless data services or send text messages.
  • Relief Worker Calling and Data Plan: AT&T developed a calling/data plan specifically designed for relief workers in Haiti to ensure that AT&T customers who are working on relief efforts in Haiti would be able to communicate as needed.
  • Donation to Télécoms Sans Frontières: AT&T provided a $50,000 donation to Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF) to support their relief work on disasters in Haiti and around the globe. This support has been augmented by funding to two other leading organizations. Project HOPE has received $75,000 and Aidmatrix received $50,000 from AT&T to support their work.
  • Wireless Phone Donation: AT&T coordinated the donation of 10,000 wireless phones to Voila, a Haitian wireless carrier. Voila turned to AT&T for help, and AT&T arranged to airlift 1,000 Motorola wireless phones to Haiti, which Voila representatives could then provide to many in dire need of communications devices.
  • U.S. State Department's Communications Sector Assessment Team Mission: AT&T has joined the U.S. State Department's Communications Sector Assessment Team on a mission to Haiti. Mike Castillo, one of the company's seasoned network and construction engineers, visited the country to provide expertise and support as the team determines the extent of damage the earthquake caused to the country's communications infrastructure and, wherever needed, facilitate the restoration of viable communications networks for the people of Haiti.
  • AT&T contributed $100,000 to the National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians (NOAH) to support an earthquake relief project that will help ensure the supply of sustainable and safe water in remote locations in Haiti. As part of the project, AT&T worked with one of its small business customers, Atlanta-based Water Transit Solutions, to supply an innovative technology solution to remote water relief requirements in Haiti. WTS provides water and ice solutions for just-in-time deployment during hurricanes, disasters and other events.

Engaging employees

United Way/Employee Giving Campaign

Our employees are an invaluable part of our citizenship and sustainability efforts, and the annual AT&T United Way/Employee Giving Campaign highlights our employees' deep spirit of giving. In 2010, employees throughout our enterprise pledged more than $31 million for charities of their choice through the United Way/Employee Giving Campaign. Along with signing up for one-time or regular contributions, employees also raised money for various nonprofits through a variety of means — online auctions, bowling fundraisers, chili cook-offs, and "Days of Caring" projects.

Volunteerism

Volunteerism is ingrained in AT&T's culture. For almost 100 years, we have been donating our time and talents to support underserved populations and strengthen our communities. Each year, approximately 300,000 of our employees and retirees take time to enhance their communities. In 2010, employees and retirees donated 9 million hours of time to community outreach activities — worth more than $192 million.2

Volunteerism continues to be a key component of AT&T Aspire, with employees finding new ways to engage and impact youth through the program. Employee volunteerism programs are part of AT&T Cares, a comprehensive, company-wide volunteer initiative designed to provide options for how employees volunteer, while encouraging them to engage, and remain engaged, in community service that is meaningful to them and their communities.

To celebrate National Volunteer Week, in April 2010, AT&T held a special AT&T Cares National Volunteer Week Contest. Employees got the chance to present their favorite nonprofit volunteer project or activity, apply for funding dollars to support the project and then rally other employees to vote for it. More than 12,000 AT&T employees cast their votes for their favorite employee volunteer project during this special fundraising event. AT&T contributed a total of $40,000 to fund the top six projects receiving the most employee votes.

The dedication of AT&T employees, who have invested thousands of volunteer hours, received national recognition in 2010:

  • For the second year in a row, AT&T is one of only a handful of companies to receive the Presidential Volunteer Service Award — Gold Level, through its partnership with Junior Achievement. This is the highest presidential award given to recognize employee volunteerism.
  • The Ladies' Home Journal "Do Good" Stamp — in recognition of corporations that give back to the community and make a difference with strong employee volunteerism and innovative and results-oriented corporate and philanthropic initiatives.
  • The 2010 Corporate Engagement Award of Excellence from the Points of Light Institute — recognizing extraordinary, effective volunteer programs that are helping to improve local communities.

Disaster Relief

When disaster strikes, AT&T employees assist victims and affected communities through corporate giving and assistance, volunteerism and network preparedness and response.

In 2010, AT&T and the AT&T Foundation contributed $442,000 to support disaster relief organizations. In addition, AT&T employees and employee groups contributed nearly $314,000 to help those affected by the Haiti disaster, Chile earthquake, the Gulf Coast oil spill, Tennessee floods, the Pakistan floods, and other local disasters.

2Note: The financial equivalent is determined by using $21.36/per volunteer hour, which is based on the 2010 industry standard from Independent Sector, a leading nonprofit organization that determines the financial equivalent for a variety of volunteer initiatives.
