Current Area Code Relief Projects in Michigan

517/989 MICHIGAN Split

Central Michigan's new area code is 989
The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a geographic area code split to accommodate the growth of telephone numbers in Central Michigan. The existing 517 area code was divided into two separate area codes: 517 and 989. Callers started using the new 989 area code on April 7, 2001. Required dialing to the 989 area code began on October 6, 2001.

The southern portion of the 517 area code retained the 517 area code, while, the northern portion became the 989 area code. Saginaw, Midland, Bay City, Mount Pleasant and Alpena are among the cities that received the 989 area code.

Dialing Procedures for the 517/989 Areas:
Calls made between the 517 and 989 areas must be dialed using 11 digits (1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number). The new area code and dialing pattern change will NOT affect the price of telephone calls placed over Ameritech's network. Emergency 9-1-1 calls have not changed. You still dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.

810/586 MICHIGAN Split

Eastern Michigan's new area code is 586
The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a geographic area code split to accommodate the growth of telephone numbers in Eastern Michigan. The 810 area code in eastern Michigan was divided into two separate area codes: 810 and 586. Callers began using the new 586 area code on September 22, 2001. Required dialing to the 586 area code began on March 23, 2002.

Under the plan approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission, telephone customers in Macomb County were assigned the new 586 area code, while the 810 area code will continue to serve the rest of the area it does today.

Telephone customers located along the border of Macomb County should view the prefix list to determine how their area code is affected, as area code boundaries do not precisely match county boundaries.

Dialing Procedures for the 810/586 Areas:
The optional dialing period from September 22, 2001 and March 23, 2002 was the time callers began practicing the new 586 area code. During the six-month period, calls to Macomb County were completed using either area code. AT&T calls made between the 810 and 586 area codes were dialed using 7-digits, or 11 digits (1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number).

After the optional dialing period ended on March 23, the 586 area code was used for all calls to the new area code. Also after that time, AT&T calls made between the 810 and 586 area codes had to be dialed using 11 digits.

Local calling areas and the cost of Ameritech calls will NOT change as a result of the new area codes. In other words, calls that were local before the area code split remain local after the area code split.

Emergency 9-1-1 calls will not change. You will still dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.

248/947 MICHIGAN Overlay

Who Does the 947 Overlay Area Code Affect?
The new 947 overlay area code will serve the same geographic area as the existing 248 area code. An overlay allows two different area codes to serve the same geographic area at the same time. Unlike an area code split, an overlay allows all existing customers to keep their existing area code and telephone numbers.

  • The way you dial local calls will change. Starting January 26, 2002 Ameritech customers in the 248 geographic area began dialing 10 digits (area code + 7-digit telephone number) for all local calls. Effective September 7, 2002 AT&T callers in the 248 and 947 area codes are required to use the new 10-digit dialing pattern to complete all local calls. Customers placing calls to local toll and long distance points will continue to dial 11-digits (1 + area code + telephone number.) Please note that zone calls will also require 11-digit dialing.
  • Who gets the new overlay area code? Telephone numbers in overlay area codes are assigned to new phone lines. Starting in October 2002 prefixes in the new 947 overlay area code will be activated on an as-needed basis as prefixes in the existing 248 area code are exhausted.

The cost of calls won't change. The cost of calls won't change. The new area codes do not affect the price of telephone calls placed over AT&T's network, and do not change local calling areas.

616/269 MICHIGAN SPLIT

Southwestern Michigan's new area code is 269
The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a geographic area code split to accommodate the growth of telephone numbers in Southwest Michigan. The 616 area code in southwest Michigan was divided into two separate area codes: 616 and 269. Callers began using the new 269 area code on July 13, 2002. Required dialing to the 269 area code began on February 15, 2003.

Under the plan approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission, the northern portion of the 616 area code retained the 616 area code. The dividing line follows the northern boundaries of the Saugatuck, Hamilton, Hopkins, Wayland, Middleville, Hastings and Woodland rate centers. Telephone customers in these rate centers and those to the south of these rate centers will received the new 269 area code. Check the prefix list to determine if your area code changed.

Dialing Procedures for the 616/269 Areas:
The optional dialing period from July 13, 2002 and February 15, 2003 was the time callers began practicing the new 269 area code. During the seven-month period, callers were able to complete calls to the affected area by dialing either the 269 or the old 616 area code.

During the optional dialing period, AT&T calls made between the 616 and 269 area codes could be dialed using 7-digits or by using 11 digits (1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number).

After the optional dialing period ended on February 15, 2003 the 269 area code was used for all calls to the new area code. Also after that time, AT&T calls made between the 616 and 269 area codes had to be dialed using 11 digits.

Local calling areas and the cost of Ameritech calls will NOT change as a result of the new area codes. In other words, calls that were local before the area code split remain local after the area code split.

Emergency 9-1-1 calls will not change. You will still dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.

313 & 734 MICHIGAN Overlays

313 & 734 - The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved the addition of a new overlay area code, 679, to be added to the combined 313 and 734 geographic areas. As the FCC requires for all overlay area codes, callers must change the way calls are dialed. At a future date, customers in the 313, 734 and the new 679 overlay area code will be required to dial 10-digits for all local calls. The effective date of the associated dialing pattern change is still to be determined.

Overlay area codes are designed to serve the same geographic area as the current area codes. The overlay plan allows everyone to keep their existing area code and telephone numbers, since this plan assigns a new area code over, or on top of, an existing area code. Then, two different area codes will serve the same geographic region at the same time.
