This summer, AT&T* is inviting software developers across the country to hack their way in to new ideas at a series of one-day “Hackathons.” At the events, currently scheduled in cities around the country, experienced coders will come together to learn about new technologies, collaborate and create innovative mobile applications. AT&T customers will benefit by getting quicker access to the best new and enhanced apps that emerge from the AT&T Mobile Hackathons.
AT&T is working with Apigee, a leading provider of application programming interface (API) management tools, to give developers future access to AT&T network-based services – including location, messaging, payment and speech – that they can use to bring their app ideas to life and enhance the mobile broadband experience. Applications with embedded APIs currently tap the AT&T network for service references to more than 2.5 billion times a month – a number that will grow as more developers learn to use the Apigee tools.
The Hackathons will give coders the opportunity to collaborate and show off their mobile app innovations at the end of the day. Events are scheduled for July 16 in Redmond, Washington, August 6 in San Jose, and August 27 in Chicago, with additional locations to be announced. Developers of all skill levels are invited to participate.
“We’re committed to engaging with developers worldwide to deliver a new wave of innovative, powerful apps to our customers that leverage the deep capabilities of the AT&T network,” said John Donovan, AT&T Chief Technology Officer. “These events will complement existing AT&T Developer Program efforts to provide tools and opportunities for developers so that they can quickly and easily get from an initial concept to an app available to our mobile customers in record time. We’re looking forward to the ideas that come out of these sessions.”
The AT&T Developer Program has ranked highest among U.S. wireless carriers for five straight years according to a survey of developers by Evans Data Corporation. Online tools and resources are available through AT&T’s developer portal at developer.att.com.
Apigee provides an industrial-grade API management platform to help companies of all sizes open their data and services via APIs to fuel their mobile, multi-channel and innovation strategies. The Apigee API platform helps enterprises reduce the complexity of providing APIs, drive developer adoption, analyze and understand API usage, and easily scale as customers’ API channels grow. Apigee also provides free tools that make it easier for developers and providers to explore and use APIs.
“Cultivating an active and vibrant developer community with easy access to APIs is key to success in the ‘appiverse,’” said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO. “AT&T has been extremely forward-thinking and is moving aggressively to create a new breed of tightly integrated AT&T apps.”
