AT&T Named To Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America For Second Consecutive Year

AT&T* announced today that it will be included in the 2011 Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America (DJSI), the second consecutive year the company received this honor. The index will be announced on September 19, 2011 at the opening of the equity markets. One of the world’s most recognizable sustainability indexes, the DJSI North America is based on a rigorous analysis of corporate, economic, environmental and social performance. The index tracks the performance of the top 20 percent of the 600 biggest North American companies in the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index that lead the field in terms of sustainability.

From reducing the amount of plastic used in its accessory packaging, to reducing the emissions of its more-than-71,500-vehicle corporate fleet, AT&T is committed to sustainable business practices across all areas of its business. The DJSI North America honor is testament to AT&T’s progress on its multiyear commitments for important environmental, education and volunteerism programs that help strengthen communities and stimulate economic growth. Critical initiatives include:

  • Investing up to a planned $565 million to roll out approximately 15,000 alternative-fuel vehicles as part of a 10-year plan through 2018. As part of this commitment, the company recently deployed its 4,000th alternative-fuel vehicle and joined the Department of Energy’s Clean Cities’ National Clean Fleets Partnership encouraging large fleets to cut petroleum use by 2.5 billion gallons by 2020.
  • Installing Bloom Energy Servers to power 11 AT&T sites in California, effectively reducing CO2 emissions for the power produced by approximately 50 percent compared to the grid and virtually eliminating some harmful smog forming particulate emissions.
