AT&T California President Ken McNeely Asks 34,000 Employees to Reduce Company Water Usage by 30%

In response to the driest California year on record and the emergency drought declaration by Governor Jerry Brown to conserve water, AT&T California President Ken McNeely today asked AT&T’s 34,000 California employees to reduce their company water usage by 30% until the drought declaration is lifted. Specifically McNeely asked employees to stop washing AT&T’s California fleet of more than 15,000 vehicles, reduce facility landscape irrigation by half, turn off decorative water features or fountains at corporate buildings and remain vigilant in identifying water waste.
“Conserving enough water to maintain our farms and communities is critical to California’s economy,” McNeely said. “AT&T has been an integral part of the Golden State for more than a century – we’ve been partners through good times and bad, and we want to do our part to reduce non-essential water consumption.”
Starting immediately, AT&T employees across the state will begin implementing measures designed to reduce AT&T’s overall California water usage. These non-essential reductions may have an impact on the aesthetics of AT&T vehicles and facilities, but will not impact network operations or our dedication to customers. Many of AT&T’s employees nationwide have already taken steps to reduce their personal water usage by making a commitment through the company’s Do One Thing initiative, which has resulted in savings of 19 million gallons of water in the last 2 years.
McNeely’s action follows an intensive year-long collaboration between AT&T and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to identify water savings across AT&T’s operations. The project resulted in a suite of tools that U.S. commercial buildings can use to collectively save up to 28 billion gallons of water annually, equivalent to the amount of water that more than 765,000 Americans use at home in a given year. The Building Water Efficiency toolkit, available at www.edf.org/attwater, gives organizations simple, cost-effective resources to build their own water efficiency programs and includes both technical and management tools to design, implement and document water savings.
