Media Kit: Choice
more choices
We’re delivering choices to our customers.
Overview
AT&T is all about choice. What today's customers want most from their provider is an unconstrained ability to reach the people, information, and entertainment they care about. And AT&T delivers. Choice in wireless devices, in the operating systems that work on them, and in compelling applications for whatever device our customers choose. Today we have a broad portfolio of content and applications, as well as, strategic relationships. And we will continue to make that experience even richer tomorrow.
No U.S. provider can match our portfolio of iconic wireless devices. We are the only American carrier to offer the U.S. iPhone 3GS. And we also have the revolutionary Blackberry Bold and a leading line of quick messaging devices. In fact, we're No. 1 in smartphone sales — twice as many people choose AT&T for smartphones. And we offer devices with almost all major operating systems.
One of AT&T’s biggest advantages in offering more choice is our GSM network. The unique nature of GSM technology enables wireless phone numbers and address book information to be stored on a SIM card. With a SIM card, available for purchase from AT&T, consumers have the freedom to carry their wireless phone numbers and contact information to any unlocked GSM enabled wireless handset. That GSM phone should operate on the AT&T network as long as it operates at the correct radio frequency.
This capability opens the door to all kinds of possibilities. For example, wireless isn’t just for wireless phones anymore. Virtually any electronic device can be wirelessly enabled. We have been working for years on this with enterprise customers. Now we are taking this to smaller businesses, as well as consumers. AT&T is driving the emergence of new categories of devices and applications that are enhanced by wireless network connectivity. This will create new categories of devices and applications, both for consumers and businesses. We see exciting potential in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications.
We're also focused on enabling the creation and delivery of compelling applications to smartphones, other wireless devices and all three screens consumers use- PC, mobile device and TV.
We deliver compelling applications to our customers in many different ways.
- We work with third-party developers to bring their applications to market (and continue to become more developer friendly every day).
- We're developing our own apps.
- We have our own application store and continue to improve it.
Choice also is about helping people. Accessibility is our commitment to customers with disabilities to provide wireless products and services they can use to meet their communications needs. This includes products such as the Apple iPhone that includes large multi-touch display and pioneering software that open up new possibilities for access by users with disabilities. It also includes applications laucned wit software developer Code Factory that are designed to increase usability for customers who are blind or who have low vision. And it includes resources such as voice-enabled services that can provide helpful dialing assistance for customers with significant visual, cognitive and physical disabilities.

Delivering Apps
Unprecedented Choice: Delivering Apps Choices to Customers
We pride ourselves on offering our customers an unprecedented array of applications on their wireless phones. Wireless apps let customers convert their handsets into the tools they need them to be — a TV, a music player, a gaming console, a navigation system, a constant link to their social networking sites and more.
The popularity of applications is skyrocketing as more consumers discover what apps can do. Today's devices, services and networks create the perfect conditions to deliver a growing number and variety of innovative apps. With a diverse mix of apps that both entertain and help our customers get things done, we offer something for everyone. AT&T applications help you do more with your services, on your time, in your way.
But we don't stop there. Our customers can download virtually any application to their handset without restriction. We make it simple and easy for customers to download apps.
At the AT&T MEdia Mall, top ringtones, cool tools and more are available for download to your wireless phone. Since MEdia Mall was first launched in December 2004, millions of customers have visited to load up on ringtones, games, videos and other applications. MEdia Mall 2.0 has more than 90,000 choices from more than 115 different content providers.
The AT&T MEdia Net Mobile Portal puts our most popular applications — MySpace, eBay, Wikipedia, and more — one-click away. We even make it easy to personalize MEdia Net. Just visit our MyMEdia Net portal on your PC, and easily customize what appears on your handset. View a list of applications available on Media Net.
AT&T Experience Store sales reps can demonstrate and sell applications about a dozen of our most popular apps to customers — on the spot. The in-store ordering system makes it easy for customers to learn about new applications and even easier to order.
Apps help connect consumers with their interests, services or entertainment — and that shouldn't be limited to a single device or location. We're working hard to deliver innovative apps that span across the three screens that matter most to consumers — the TV, the PC and the wireless phone. AT&T three-screen apps help customers access their information wherever and whenever they want, from whatever device they choose. It's another way AT&T is making apps more relevant and useful to our customers.
Developer Friendly
Working with Third-Party Developers
We've done a lot of work on apps for devices that aren't smartphones, working closely with third-party developers. This is a sizable share of our customer base and we are always thinking about all our customers. No other carrier is looking beyond smartphones for applications. And no other is working with developers and incenting them to create apps for consumer and business applications. Here are some of the programs:
AT&T was the first major wireless carrier to create a developer relations program, devCentral, in 2002. Today, more than 20,000 developers are registered on the Web site.
Learn about the latest developments in mobile web technologies and the profound impact they are having on applications. Join devCentral for free webcasts.
We also launched the Choice Web site in March 2008 to present to developers the many choices available to them — all in one place. This site also provides tools that help developers create new mobile applications and devices. We also offer a number of contests to help developers get their applications on the AT&T wireless network.
AT&T devCentral hosted the Fast-Pitch 2009 contest April 1-2. Get video blogs of the action from the Consumer Fast-Pitch event here.
Big Mobile on Campus Challenge is our national higher education contest for mobile application development that recognizes innovative and creative mobile applications that enhance academic performance, build campus community and help to improve campus operations.
We also offer the Developers Summit, where attendees had a chance to meet with AT&T experts along with representatives from several handset makers. This is geared towards developers of software and hardware mobile solutions. Join us to learn more.
