John Montford Named President, SBC Southwestern Bell

SBC Communications announced today that Edward Drilling has been named president, SBC Southwestern Bell - Arkansas, responsible for regulatory, legislative, governmental and external affairs activities in the state. Drilling is a native of Morrilton, Ark.; he has been with Southwestern Bell for 23 years and most recently served as Vice President, External Affairs - Arkansas.
"Ed has a great track record in our industry and our communities," said John Montford, president, SBC Southwestern Bell. "He also understands the unique qualities of Arkansas; his experience and leadership will serve the state's customers and communities well."
Drilling began his career with SBC in 1979 in Arkansas. Since that time, he has served in a range of operational and public affairs roles. His deep ties to Arkansas include serving on the board of the Arkansas Children's Hospital and the Little Rock Public Education Foundation. He also serves as president of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Arkansas Foundation. Additionally, he has served as a board member of the Greater Little Rock Chamber of Commerce and the Vision Little Rock leadership team. Drilling earned his bachelor's degree in business from the University of Arkansas - Fayetteville.
Drilling replaces Cindy Brinkley, who will now serve as President, SBC Southwestern Bell - Missouri. He will report to Montford.

SBC also announced today that John Montford has been named president, SBC Southwestern Bell and SBC SNET, responsible for overall regulatory, legislative, governmental and external affairs activities in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Connecticut.
"John Montford's legislative and leadership experience - honed through years of service as a state senator and as chancellor of the Texas Tech University system - will be invaluable as we serve customers in today's fast-moving communications environment," said William Daley, president, SBC Communications. "John's proven skills as a consensus-builder will further SBC's efforts to tackle legislative and regulatory challenges we face."
Montford most recently served as SBC senior vice president - state legislative and political affairs. Montford will continue to report to Daley.
Prior to joining SBC, Montford served as chancellor of the Texas Tech University System and before that served for 14 years in the Texas Senate.
Montford replaces Wayne Alexander, who is retiring after 31 years of service with SBC. Alexander started with the company in Kansas City and has served a majority of his career in key executive positions in marketing, international operations and public affairs. He also is an active leader in many civic activities and organizations.
