SBC Communications today announced that John T. Montford has been named president, SBC Southwestern Bell and SBC SNET, responsible for overall regulatory, legislative, governmental and external affairs activities in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Connecticut.

"John Montford's legislative and leadership experience - honed through years of service as a state senator and as chancellor of the Texas Tech University system - will be invaluable as we serve customers in today's fast-moving communications environment," said William Daley, president, SBC Communications. "John's proven skills as a consensus-builder will further SBC's efforts to tackle key legislative and regulatory challenges that affect our customers and communities."

Montford most recently served as SBC senior vice president - state legislative and political affairs. Montford will continue to report to Mr. Daley.

Immediately prior to joining SBC, Montford served as chancellor of the Texas Tech University System and before that served for 14 years in the Texas Senate. During his tenure in the Senate, Montford served as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and chairman of the Senate State Affairs Committee. He was elected president pro tem for the 73rd Legislative Session. Montford also was an officer in the United States Marine Corps and served as an elected district attorney in Texas. He was named chancellor emeritus of Texas Tech University in December 2001. Montford received his bachelor's degree in political science and his juris doctor from the University of Texas at Austin.

Montford replaces Wayne Alexander, who is retiring after 31 years of service with SBC. Alexander started with the company in Kansas City and has served a majority of his career in key executive positions in marketing, international operations and public affairs. He also is an active leader in many civic activities and organizations.

"Wayne Alexander has served SBC in many different leadership roles throughout his more than 30-year career," said Daley. "We appreciate his service to the company, and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Newton Named SBC's New Leader in Texas

SBC also announced today that Jan Newton has been named president, SBC Southwestern Bell - Texas, responsible for regulatory, legislative, governmental and external affairs activities in Texas. Newton will be based in Austin and report to Montford. Since 1999, Newton has served as president, SBC Southwestern Bell - Missouri.

"Jan Newton has a great track record in Missouri and will bring her valuable experience to our efforts in Texas," said Montford. "Jan's a native Texan who understands the unique quality of the state and its legislature. And, her deep experience and leadership will serve our Texas customers and communities well."

Since joining the company in 1976, Newton has held numerous management positions and gained experience in finance, sales, marketing and regulatory affairs.

Newton was selected by Missouri Governor Bob Holden to serve on his Missouri Security Panel, co-chairing that panel's Critical Technologies Committee. She is a member of Civic Progress and served on the boards of Backstoppers; the Girl Scout Council of Greater St. Louis; Greater St. Louis Area Boy Scouts; Grand Center; Hawthorn Foundation; Junior Achievement of Mississippi Valley, Inc.; St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association (RCGA); St. Louis Symphony; and

United Way of Greater St. Louis. Newton also has served as president of the St. Louis Variety Club, Chair of the Greater St. Louis Economic Development Council, and Vice Chair of Economic Development on RCGA's Board. The St. Louis Business Journal recognized Newton on its 2000 list of St. Louis' "Most Influential Business Women."

Newton is a native of Brownfield, Texas. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at Texas Tech University in Lubbock and completed post-graduate management programs at Duke University and the University of Southern California.

She replaces Shawn McKenzie, who is moving to SBC International Operations.
