SBC Ameritech Illinois Local Calling Rates Reduced by $24 Million Statewide

Rate Reduction on Top of $6.7 Million Annual Savings for Illinois Customers from Introduction of Unlimited Local Toll on July 1

SBC Ameritech Illinois customers will see $24 million a year in savings, as a result of rate reductions for residential service that become effective today.

The rate reduction is part of the company's annual rate filing for "non-competitive" services, such as basic residential service, under an alternative regulation plan approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission in 1994. The company filed the $24 million rate reduction package on Wednesday.

"This demonstrates SBC Ameritech Illinois' continuing commitment to bring value and state-of-the-art telecommunications products and services to our customers," said Carrie Hightman, president, SBC Ameritech Illinois.

Every year for the past eight years, rates for telephone service have been reduced for a cumulative rate reduction of $348 million under the alternative regulation plan. Individual savings depend on calling patterns, volume, calling package subscriptions and other factors.

"The alternative regulation plan both protects consumers and ensures that Illinois keeps pace with a changing marketplace by encouraging an unprecedented level of investment in our infrastructure - almost $6 billion overall since 1995," Hightman said.

New Unlimited Local Toll Plan Also Provides Savings

The rate reduction filing comes on the heels of the July 1 launch of unlimited local toll - calls generally greater than 15 miles -- for Illinois subscribers of SBC's Complete Solution package

The change in the package will save SBC's Illinois residential customers $6.7 million annually.

The Complete Solution package with Caller ID, Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling and Call Forwarding is part of SBC's consumer packages with unlimited local calling, which were introduced earlier this year. There are three other levels of "Solutions" packages that also include Line-Backer maintenance service, as well as a range of calling services and local toll minutes. Rate Reduction Highlights
Products and services targeted for reductions in Wednesday's filing include:

  • Local Band B calls, generally calls 8 to 15 miles in distance, will now be billed on a per-call, rather than a timed basis. Band B calls will cost 3 to 5 cents per call, depending on time of day. Customers who subscribe to calling packages can make Band B calls at even lower rates.
  • Charges for new service and transfer of service will decrease to $24.90 from $33.05.
  • Customers who subscribe to The WORKS and Value packages will see savings ranging from 55 cents to one dollar per month.
