AT&T and Lightstream Collaborate on IP-Enabled Network for Flying J
AT&T Links Company's 200 Locations in United States and Canada
Ogden, Utah, April 26, 2006
AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) and Lightstream Communications Inc. announced today that AT&T has been selected by Flying J Inc., the nation's No. 1 distributor of diesel fuel and a leading truck-stop operator, to provide an IP (Internet Protocol)-enabled network serving more than 200 Flying J locations. Included among these locations are 178 travel plazas and fuel stops in the U.S. and Canada. Lightstream, a telecommunications solutions provider, supplied network design and engineering and project management to tailor the network to Flying J's unique needs.
Employing 14,000 people nationwide, Flying J is a fully integrated petroleum company engaged in the exploration, production, refining, transportation, wholesaling and retail marketing of petroleum products. Flying J's new sophisticated network of 178 state-of-the-art travel plazas and fuel stops is located along national highways in 41 states and three Canadian provinces. Flying J goes beyond offering the usual truck-stop fare of food, fuel and showers by providing value-added services, including wireless Internet connections, banking, bulk-fuel programs, fuel-cost analysis, insurance and truck fleet sales.
As part of the two-year $4.2 million deal, AT&T will connect Flying J's headquarters site and its 178 travel plazas, convenience stores, restaurants and truck service centers. The new AT&T network will be utilized for point of sale and inventory applications, including tracking fuel, merchandise and services sold at convenience stores.. For its customers, the new network will track fuel purchases through Flying J's loyalty program, earning points that can be redeemed for future purchases. In addition, convenience store merchandise purchases are tracked through Flying J's integrated inventory-management system, which notifies its headquarters database of type and quantity of purchase and automatically replenishes those items.
"Lightstream designed and engineered a network solution with the reliability and scalability we need to serve our customers today and into the future," said Bron McCall, Flying J's chief information officer. "The AT&T sophisticated network infrastructure enables us to deliver state-of-the-art services to our customers, and it streamlines our internal processes."
