AT&T to Invest More Than $130 Million in Florida in 2007 to Expand Wireless Coverage; More Than $800 Million Invested in Wireless Network Statewide Since 2005
Boca Raton, Louisiana, July 18, 2007
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), the nation's largest wireless carrier, has announced an investment of more than $130 million into the Florida wireless network in 2007, bringing AT&T's statewide investment since 2005 in excess of $800 million.
Part of AT&T's 2007 Florida network investment includes the expansion of its third-generation (3G) wireless broadband footprint on the Treasure Coast and in Key West this fall. The company rolled out 3G in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach in South Florida last year, providing customers with DSL-type speeds and access to the latest news, weather and entertainment programming through AT&T Video and AT&T Music.
AT&T's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network coverage also will be expanded this year on the northern end of Palm Beach and inside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
"Our goal is to ensure that AT&T customers have the very best wireless experience possible, which includes unmatched coverage and quality of service," said Rich Guidotti, vice president and general manager for AT&T's South Florida wireless operations.
"The versatility of our network is unsurpassed. Because our network is based on the GSM standard, if customers leave our 3G service footprint, they will automatically convert to our EDGE network—the largest high-speed data network in the country. With other services, customers could lose access until re-entering a comparable network."
AT&T diligently monitors the quality and coverage of its network. In addition to third-party vendors that assess the company's network performance, AT&T network engineers constantly monitor the Florida network and drive more than one million miles annually throughout the state to ensure that the network is operating at peak efficiency.
As a result of the AT&T-BellSouth merger and Cingular Wireless consolidation last December, customers are seeing accelerated changes, including the introduction of the AT&T Unity plans. AT&T Unity subscribers get unlimited free domestic calls to and from 100 million wireline and wireless phone numbers, and the launch of the revolutionary iPhone. AT&T's wireless stores also have been offering products such as high speed Internet service since 2006.
"Through our ability to combine wireless and wireline networks, we are speeding up the convergence of new voice, data and video services that will lead the industry's shift to next-generation, Internet Protocol-based technologies," added Guidotti. "It's our customers who will benefit from the unique blending of our companies. We're off to a great start already, and the future promises to be very exciting for Florida."
