AT&T Foundation Gives $25,000 Grant to Llano Grande Center to Support Education Initiatives
College Preparatory Center in Low-Income Community to Use AT&T Gift for Technology Upgrades
San Antonio, Texas, August 30, 2007
The AT&T Foundation — the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) — has announced a $25,000 grant to the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development (LGC). The grant will go to support a new technology infrastructure that will allow the center, which is located in a predominantly Hispanic, low-income community, to improve college preparatory services and provide a well-rounded educational experience for area students.
"At the Llano Grande Center, our mission is to give underprivileged students every opportunity to excel, and to change the way students, parents, and teachers think about college readiness," said Llano Grande Center executive director, Francisco Guajardo, Ph.D. "This generous grant from the AT&T Foundation will directly influence our students' intellectual and social development through an exploration of self and community."
Field trips, culturally relevant instruction and college preparatory classes are the main ways that students participate at LGC. Equipment purchased with the AT&T Foundation grant will allow these services to be expanded as the center hires more staff to ensure quality instruction. The grant will also allow the center to better attract outstanding recent college graduates who are looking to get involved in an innovative teaching program.
The technology equipment will allow students to learn computer skills and use advanced equipment that will aid them in pursuing higher education or entering the workforce. With exposure not only to classroom and textbook knowledge, students at LGC have a working knowledge of technology and the professional world to round out their abilities.
"Furthering education is one of the main goals, if not the foremost goal, of the AT&T Foundation," said Sergio Contreras, AT&T area manager of External Affairs "The Llano Grande Center has such a rich history of helping students in the area to have the best opportunities for success, and we are proud to assist the center in this endeavor."
"The Llano Grande Center is an excellent resource for Latino students to help them adequately prepare for college, and hopefully more students will begin using their services, which include assistance with the application process and an advocate to help them trouble-shoot what is needed for success in college," said Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. "Any program that increases opportunities for Latinos in higher education is one that is truly helping our Latino community."
"There are so many students who need guidance in how to apply for college and need extra help in taking the right steps to get to the best universities and colleges, and LGC does just that," said Rep. Aaron Peña. "As technology changes, the application process changes — programs such as those at LGC prevent students from being deterred by the application and research aspect and encourage them to strive for what is best for them."
LGC was formally founded in 1997 by a handful of schoolteachers with a vision to show Edcouch-Elsa High School students that pursuing higher education was a real option, as well as a necessity. In the past decade, the center has built up a strong network of professional alumni, who spread the word about LGC's community involvement and volunteer their own time to help LGC stay prominent among area students.
