AT&T Awards $100,000 to Excellence In Education Program

Grant Will Help Create Innovative, State-of-the-Art Enrichment Opportunities for Students Within the San Antonio Independent School District

San Antonio, Texas, October 10, 2007

The AT&T Foundation, the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced today a $100,000 grant to the San Antonio Foundation for Excellence in Education Inc. The grant will help enhance the teaching methods, practices and materials that are aimed at providing academic success to students in the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD).

Research has shown that the relationship between the classroom teacher and the student significantly affects the academic performance of students. With the AT&T funding, the newly formed Excellence in Education Foundation grant program will be able to establish and maintain programs that will be crucial to preparing students to enter higher learning and the workforce.

"This program is something that we SAISD hope will result in higher grade point averages for students, as well as decreased absences," said Dr. Robert J. DurĂ³n, SAISD superintendent. "We are excited that this program encourages habits that can be used in a life-long learning capacity. The fact that we can meet such a necessary demand is very rewarding because we can see positive changes being made in the lives of the students."

"Excellence in Education has generated creative ideas that foster brilliant young minds, and I am proud that students here in San Antonio have programs such as this that can reach students at so many levels and approach learning beyond the standard practices," said Mary Alice Cisneros, District 1 city councilwoman.

"AT&T is proud to support the education initiatives advocated by the Excellence in Education program at SAISD," said John Montford, AT&T senior vice president of Western region Legislative and Regulatory Affairs. "We look forward to this grant program resulting in more motivated, productive and highly educated and successful students."

Today's media event also announced that John T. Montford has been named the chairman for the Excellence in Education Foundation.
