AT&T Announces More Than $275,000 in Grants to Support Technology Initiatives in Sacramento Area
$50,000 Grant to Support Web Site Development and Web Dialogues on Building Healthy Communities
Sacramento, California, December 5, 2007
The AT&T Foundation, the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), today announced more than $275,000 in grants to support 15 nonprofit organizations in the Greater Sacramento area through the AT&T Excelerator competitive technology grant program.
The program helps nonprofits integrate technology into their operations and community outreach and also places technology tools in the hands of underserved populations. In addition, the grants provide resources such as education programs, Internet access, computer training and job-skills development.
This year's Excelerator grant funding includes a $50,000 contribution to the Institute for Local Government, an organization that provides information, resources and tools for thousands of city, county and school officials throughout California. The organization's core programs include children's health, land use and housing, public service ethics, fiscal stewardship, civic engagement and climate change initiatives.
Funding for the Institute for Local Government will be used to help develop the Healthy Communities section of the organization's Web site to share best practices for promoting healthy lifestyles and environments. In addition, the grant will support a series of Web dialogues to help public officials gain new insights, exchange ideas and broaden awareness of the institute's efforts on behalf of community health issues.
"Through the AT&T Excelerator grant program, organizations such as the Institute for Local Government can explore innovative ways to use technology to meet their objectives," explained Kathy McKim, vice president of External Affairs – Sacramento area. "I'm thrilled that our support will help the institute communicate with community representatives from throughout the state and encourage them to share, develop and implement great ideas about building healthier communities."
"Officials from remote or rural areas, and those from communities with limited financial resources, are often unable to travel to our educational workshops and conferences here in Sacramento," said JoAnne Speers, executive director, Institute for Local Government. "Our Web site is a key vehicle for providing information, and we're excited that it can now become a way for more participants to engage in a dialogue about promoting healthy lifestyles in their communities."
Other Sacramento-area organizations receiving this year's AT&T Excelerator technology grants include: Arc of California, California Coalition for Youth, California Rural Indian Health Board, Capital Public Radio and Observer Educational Foundation.
Since 2002, the AT&T Excelerator program has provided more than 2,500 technology grants — totaling more than $47.8 million — to organizations across the country. In 2007, AT&T awarded $9 million in Excelerator technology grants to 680 nonprofit organizations across the country.
In 2006, AT&T Inc. and the AT&T Foundation contributed more than $101 million to nonprofit organizations across the country.
