AT&T Announces More Than $125,000 in Grants to Support Technology Initiatives in San Joaquin Valley

AT&T Excelerator Grants Assist Organizations Serving Diverse Ethnic Groups, Low-Income Families, People With Disabilities, Youth and Seniors

Sacramento, California, December 12, 2007

The AT&T Foundation, the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), today announced more than $125,000 in grants to support seven nonprofit organizations in the San Joaquin Valley through the AT&T Excelerator competitive technology grant program.

The program helps nonprofits integrate technology into their operations and community outreach and also places technology tools in the hands of underserved populations. In addition, the grants provide resources such as education programs, Internet access, computer training and job-skills development.

This year's San Joaquin Valley Excelerator grant funding includes $25,000 to support Radio Bilingÿe, a nonprofit Latino public radio network founded in 1976 to cover important issues affecting the Latino community. Radio Bilingÿe today provides community-radio programming at six stations throughout California and also reaches listeners across the country through its Spanish-language satellite service.

Radio Bilingÿe will use the funding for technology upgrades, including a new server with the capacity to implement cutting-edge Web site improvements such as on-demand audio, podcasts, digital archives and a multimedia "mob blog" for mobile phone users. These technology improvements are designed to help Radio Bilingÿe increase listener participation and reach a new, younger audience.

"This grant will allow Radio Bililngue to enhance our Web services and content and provide a greater number of people in our community with access to our programming and broadcast archives," said Hugo Morales, executive director of Radio Bilingÿe. "The online content we'll be able to provide to Spanish-speaking populations is not readily available on the Web, so we're glad this grant will help make that possible."

"It's important to AT&T to ensure technology can be used to reach and support underserved populations," said Eric Johnson, executive director of External Affairs for AT&T in Fresno. "Radio Bilingÿe is a great example of how an Excelerator grant can make a true difference."

Other San Joaquin Valley organizations receiving this year's AT&T Excelerator technology grants include:

  • Bakersfield Homeless Center/Alliance Against Family Violence: A $24,894 grant will support technology-infrastructure upgrades.
  • City of Fresno/Fresno Connect Project: the $30,000 grant will be used to provide basic computer, Internet and workforce-skills training for Fresno-area students, adults and seniors.
  • Lao Khmu Association: Its $19,500 grant will be used for technology-infrastructure and Web site upgrades to help the organization provide social service and community health programs for the Southeast Asian communities the organization serves.
  • ImagineU Children's Museum: The $9,606 grant will support software, hardware and Web site upgrades to improve communications with volunteers and donors.
  • Growing Merced Foundation: Its $15,000 grant will be used for computer equipment and technical training to support the organization's efforts to identify and encourage emerging manufacturing businesses in Merced County.
  • Sierra Nonprofit Support Center: The $4,500 grant will be used to support Web site enhancements, including volunteer matching, a calendar of volunteer opportunities and volunteer management tools.

Since 2002, the AT&T Excelerator program has provided more than 2,500 technology grants — totaling more than $47.8 million — to organizations across the country. In 2007, AT&T has awarded $9 million in Excelerator technology grants to 680 nonprofit organizations across the country.
