AT&T Announces More Than $130,000 in Grants to Support Technology Initiatives in San Diego Area

Excelerator Technology Grants Assist Organizations Serving Diverse Ethnic Groups, Low-Income Families, People With Disabilities, Youth and Seniors

San Diego, California, December 13, 2007

The AT&T Foundation, the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), today announced more than $130,000 in grants to support 19 nonprofit organizations in the Greater San Diego area through the AT&T Excelerator competitive technology grant program.

The program helps nonprofits integrate technology into their operations and community outreach, and also places technology tools in the hands of underserved populations. In addition, the grants provide resources such as education programs, Internet access, computer training and job-skills development.

This year's San Diego-area Excelerator grant funding includes $10,000 to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County, an organization that provides personal and educational development programs for disadvantaged youth in the El Cajon, Lakeside and Santee communities.

Funding will be used to support the organization's major effort to acquire a new donor database to improve data management, planning and reporting and enhance communication with donors. The new donor database will also enable the organization to establish an online giving program to encourage new and recurring gifts.

"A state-of-the-art database will improve our donor program's effectiveness and help us meet the needs of the more than 2,200 youth we serve," explained Jerry Fazio, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County. "The new database will give us a boost in many ways, such as expanding information storage, campaign planning and adding new online giving options. But perhaps most important, it will improve our communication with key supporters such as AT&T."

The new database will also allow the organization to easily manage data and communications for volunteers, special events, members and alumni. The database project is expected to be completed early next year.

AT&T Excelerator grants support worthy nonprofit organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County by helping them obtain new technologies that ultimately result in improved or increased programs for the populations they serve," said Ignacio De La Torre, executive director of External Affairs for AT&T in San Diego. "I'm proud that we can play a role in helping so many organizations make a positive impact in the San Diego community."

Other San Diego-area organizations receiving this year's AT&T Excelerator technology grants include:

  • Aquatic Adventures Science Education Foundation: The $7,500 grant will be used to support the purchase of grant-management software and to enhance the organization's Web site with an online auction tool.
  • Friends of Chula Vista Nature Center: Its $10,000 will support Web site upgrades, including a webcam for the eagle exhibit.
  • Nonprofit Management Solutions: The $15,525 grant will support remote computer network services, including troubleshooting, technical support and training for nonprofit organizations in the San Diego area.
  • Quail Botanical Gardens Foundation: Its $10,000 will support a technology-infrastructure upgrade, including an upgrade to the organization's database software.
  • San Diego Futures Foundation: The $10,000 grant will be used to support the organization's efforts to provide technology assistance to nonprofit agencies in the San Diego area.

Since 2002, the AT&T Excelerator program has provided more than 2,500 technology grants — totaling more than $47.8 million — to organizations across the country. In 2007, AT&T has awarded $9 million in Excelerator technology grants to 680 nonprofit organizations across the country.
