AT&T Ready to Respond to Hurricane Ike, Provide Assistance to Evacuees
Houston, Texas, September 12, 2008
As Hurricane Ike bears down on Texas, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced that its employees are ready to respond to the storm and are already providing important communications assistance for evacuees.
AT&T wired and wireless networks continue to perform reliably, even as call volumes increase in potential areas of storm impact. The company has implemented additional measures to prepare its networks for the likelihood of high winds and flooding.
At the same time, the company is taking steps to provide essential communications services to evacuees coming to the state's primary evacuation shelter, located in San Antonio. To help evacuees stay in touch with their loved ones, the company has deployed resources including:
- Wired telephone lines with free local and long distance calling;
- AT&T High Speed Internet Service for accessing email; and
- Charging stations for wireless phones.
Additionally, so that evacuees have access to important news as well as entertainment during their stay, AT&T and DISH Network are providing AT&T | DISH Network digital satellite television service in the public and dining areas of the shelter, as well as to the command post.
AT&T reminds residents fleeing the storm to make sure they have a family communications plan for staying in contact if separated, keep their wireless phone batteries charged, and forward their home phone number to their wireless number. AT&T encourages its customers to send $5 donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by sending a text message from their mobile phones. A customer simply types the keyword GIVE to 2HELP (24357). A confirmation message will arrive within a few minutes, and the customer then replies YES to confirm his or her donation.
