AT&T Announces Winners for 2008 Big Mobile on Campus Challenge
National Mobile Application Development Contest for Higher Education Seeds Innovative Ideas
Dallas, Texas, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, October 27, 2008
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced the winners of its first Big Mobile On Campus Challenge, a national higher education contest for mobile application development. Prizes will be awarded at a special reception during the AT&T Higher Education CIO Forum on Oct. 27 at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes in Orlando, Fla.
The grand-prize winner is a team of full-time students from Stanford University. Kayvon Beykpour, Aaron Wasserman, Ben Cunningham and Felipe Pimentel won for their "iStanford" five-part application suite. They will split a $10,000 scholarship, and each team member will receive an iPhone 3G 16GB and a trip to the EduCause Annual Conference in Orlando. Students can use iStanford to add and drop courses, plan schedules around a particular major or minor, view bills, search the school directory and campus map, and get up-to-the-minute scores and news updates for varsity athletics. A committed team of Stanford administrators assisted with iStanford, which offers a custom-tailored user experience that is designed to improve the quality of student services provided by the university. iStanford is now available for free through Apple's App Store.
The first runners-up are Jeff Brown and Ron Vetter, staff members at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, for "Dub Hunt," a scavenger-hunt game via text messaging that was developed to help foster a greater sense of campus community. Brown and Vetter will share $5,000 in cash, and each will receive an iPhone 3G 16GB.
The second runner-up is Patrick Riley, a full-time student from the University of California, Berkeley, for "mReplay Mobi," which allows users to interact with a Slingbox, live TV or other video stream from a mobile device. Riley will receive a $5,000 scholarship and an iPhone 3G 16GB.
"After reviewing the submissions, it is clear that we are on the brink of an explosion in the mobile application space," said Chris Hill, AT&T vice president of Enterprise Business Solutions, Government, Education and Medical. "Our Big Mobile On Campus Challenge illustrates the ability to take extremely innovative ideas and easily develop them into applications on platforms such as the iPhone. AT&T congratulates each of the winners of the contest."
The Big Mobile On Campus Challenge for full-time college students and staff was established to develop innovative and creative mobile applications that enhance academic performance, build campus community and help improve campus security operations.
