AT&T Opens New Office in Dubai Internet City
New regional headquarters underscores AT&T's strategic commitment to the Middle East & Africa
Dallas, Texas, April 15, 2009
Dubai, United Arab Emirates — AT&T* today announced the opening of its new regional headquarters office in Dubai Internet City (DIC). The new office is further evidence of AT&T’s continuing success and commitment to the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
The occasion was marked by a visit from Ronald E. Spears, president and CEO of AT&T Business Solutions, who is visiting Dubai as part of a multi-country trip in the region. Spears began the trip in Bahrain, participating as a keynote speaker and panelist in the Gulf Region Communications Conference, a high level multilateral meeting of Ministers of Communication and other government and private sector leaders, to discuss cooperative opportunities for the ICT sector to enhance economic development and stability.
At the conference, Spears spoke with other participants about the impressive telecommunications investments already being made within countries in the region, and he focused on the important opportunity to further connect these country network investments, with a new pan-regional network infrastructure.
“A robust and secure pan-regional network would benefit companies across all sectors and the region as a whole,” said Spears. “AT&T is committed to being a constructive participant in the dialogue with the government and private sector leaders in the region, and we hope we can work closely together to develop a pan-regional communications network.
“A growing number of multinational customers are doing business in the region. AT&T’s new office in Dubai is a significant step in its efforts to meet the needs of companies requiring services and a solution delivered via a global IP-based infrastructure. It allows us to further expand our operations so we can effectively serve the companies that do business here.”
AT&T recently announced plans to invest approximately $1 billion in 2009 to continue building out its global network, while driving new services and network-based applications to businesses. Spurred by continued demand for business applications made possible by the proliferation of high speed communication networks and mobile devices worldwide, the investment will focus on network infrastructure, services and support.
Over the past three years, AT&T has made significant investments in the Middle East. AT&T’s global network provides services for multinational companies throughout the MEA region and offers customers access to its advanced portfolio of Internet Protocol (IP) based managed communications services including hosting, security and worldwide connectivity.
Through its cooperative arrangements with leading local telecommunications companies, such as QTel, Saudi Telecommunications Company and Etisalat, as well as NavLink (a company in which AT&T maintains a minority shareholding). AT&T is able to connect customers to their other facilities around the world with seamless, consistent services. AT&T’s global network provides multinational companies operating in the Middle East region with access to an advanced portfolio of Internet Protocol (IP) based managed communications services including hosting, security and worldwide connectivity.
AT&T’s latest network node in the region to become operational is in Saudi Arabia, serving the networking requirements for customers in the largest economy in the Middle East. The node, which is located in Jeddah, is operated in cooperation with Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC) and NavLink. The advanced data infrastructure from AT&T will allow AT&T customers to connect directly to STC’s nationwide Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network – the largest and most advanced MPLS network in the Middle East region.
AT&T has long been a strong supplier of international wholesale voice and data services and has evolved into a true business solutions provider through offering access to integrated solutions that help wholesale customers effectively run their businesses and compete in today’s global marketplace. AT&T Wholesale develops strong commercial relationships with global service providers to connect them with infrastructure and applications to help them to sustain and grow their customer base.
AT&T opened its first office in Dubai in 2006 to meet the needs of its customers and since then has continued to build and consolidate its position in the region. In October 2007, John B. Gibson was appointed President, AT&T Middle East and Africa, leading AT&T’s efforts in the region. This was followed in November 2008 by the appointment of Kevin Maher as regional vice president to focus on sales and support for AT&T’s global enterprise customers in the region. The new office space is the next step in AT&T’s progression in the Middle East region.
“We feel privileged to host AT&T as our newest business client,” said Malek Al Malek, Executive Director of Dubai Internet City. “As the largest provider of both local and long distance telephone services in the US and an established brand in the global telecommunications industry, the opening of AT&T’s office in the DIC further attests to the DIC’s status as a regional hub that offers an unrivalled business environment for companies seeking to expand their regional footprint.
“We pride ourselves in providing our customers with comprehensive services and key ingredients for growth as we look forward to a fruitful relationship with AT&T. In our commitment to emerge as one of the world’s largest ICT clusters, Dubai Internet City is firmly moving ahead with its ambitious growth plans.”
Home to many Fortune 500 companies as well as more than 1,000 specialised industry leaders from diverse segments of the information and communication technology sectors, Dubai Internet City has emerged as one of the largest ICT clusters in the world, providing the backbone to the industry while catering to the region’s increasing focus as a knowledge-economy.
