AT&T* announced today that global growth consulting company, Frost & Sullivan, has named AT&T Navigator, powered by TeleNav, as the 2009 “Consumer Navigation Application of the Year.” Frost & Sullivan chose AT&T Navigator due to its wide array of features including integrated speech recognition, 3D moving maps, traffic alerts with one-touch rerouting, estimated time of arrival calculation, pedestrian mode, location-based city/state auto-suggest and an accompanying pre-planning website.

“AT&T Navigator has set the pace in the industry with an evolving and comprehensive set of capabilities,” said Jeanine Sterling, research analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “As a best-in-class solution, it provides advanced features that offer far more than just navigation and mapping functionality.”

“It’s terrific to be recognized by Frost & Sullivan for our AT&T Navigator service,” said Mark Collins, vice president of voice and data products for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “AT&T Navigator has been a big hit with our customers since its launch last spring. It was our top-performing application in 2008 and continues to top our apps leaderboard in 2009.”

AT&T Navigator is available on a variety of AT&T mobile phones and smartphones. AT&T Navigator’s local search (points of interest) capabilities include keyword and fuzzy search, gas by price, Wi-Fi hotspots and airports. Other features include real-time traffic alerts with one-touch rerouting, instant weather reports, traffic commute alerts, Bluetooth audio capability and multiple languages.

Additionally, AT&T Navigator is currently the only GPS-based service available from a U.S. wireless carrier to provide international navigation capabilities. AT&T Navigator Global Edition, launched last summer, can be used in most countries in Western Europe, North America and the U.S. Caribbean as well as six major metropolitan cities in China.

By the year 2013, Frost & Sullivan projects that U.S. carrier-generated annual revenues for location-based applications will reach approximately $3.3 billion in the consumer sector. The number and variety of LBS products is expected to continue increasing at a rapid pace; however, Frost & Sullivan expects navigation services to persist as the premier consumer LBS application category throughout this time period.

The Frost & Sullivan Award for Product of the Year is presented annually to the wireless company that has demonstrated excellence in product development and launch. The recipient’s product/technology effort is expected to have significant and positive impact on the expansion of mobile and wireless communications capabilities. Measurement criteria include significance of the new product in its industry, competitive advantage of the new product, product innovation, product acceptance in the marketplace, value-added services provided to customers, and number of competitors with similar products.
