AT&T Expanding Wireless Coverage in New Mexico
AT&T Continues to Expand Nation's Fastest 3G Wireless Network Across New Mexico; Total State Investment From 2006-2008 More Than $85 Million
Albuquerque, New Mexico, April 15, 2009
AT&T* today unveiled its network expansion plans for New Mexico in 2009. AT&T plans to continue rolling out third generation (3G) wireless services to improve coverage across the state and in the Albuquerque metropolitan area in 2009, as more and more people's lives become increasingly mobile and fast-paced, and to address the growing demand for advanced wireless data products and services.
The expansion of its 3G wireless broadband network—the nation’s fastest, according to recent data compiled by leading independent wireless research firms—is part of AT&T’s ongoing effort to build the broadband networks that will create jobs and fuel economic growth, and enable its customers to access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.
“In addition to providing the latest technology to New Mexico residents and businesses, this investment in the state’s technological infrastructure will strengthen our economy,” said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. “Announcements like this keep us on track for continued success.”
From 2006 to 2008, AT&T’s total capital investment in New Mexico was more than $85 million. This includes 102 new cell sites and 115 site upgrades to 3G service in New Mexico from 2006 to 2008. The network expansion serves the growing demand for advanced wireless data services like the iPhone 3G™.
“We continue to make significant investments to deliver dependable high speed wireless access in more places across New Mexico for consumers and business customers who need to stay connected to work, family and friends,” said Jerry Fuentes, president of AT&T Arizona-New Mexico. “Our ongoing investments will help us fulfill this vision while ensuring that our states have access to the advanced wireless broadband services that help drive economic growth.”
The 2009 expansion effort builds upon the three new cell sites and 51 site upgrades to 3G service that AT&T added in 2008 to expand network coverage in Albuquerque. AT&T’s 3G network is now available in nearly 350 U.S. major metropolitan areas, including Albuquerque.
The super-charged network opens the door to a new era of advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content, such as AT&T Video ShareSM, a first-of-its-kind technology that allows users to share live video during a wireless call.
“Our top priority in 2009 is to continue to enhance the wireless network so our customers have the best possible experience every time they make a call, send a text, or check an e-mail on their AT&T device,” said Chris Percy, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in Arizona and New Mexico. “Our commitment to the network has become even more important as people increasingly rely on AT&T mobile devices.”
AT&T’s wireless network is based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technologies, the most open and widely used wireless network platform in the world. As a result, only AT&T can offer 3G data roaming in more than 70 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 200 countries, in addition to AT&T’s constant 3G expansion in the U.S. Nearly all devices in AT&T’s current portfolio are “world phones” that can be used globally.
AT&T operates six AT&T-owned retail locations in New Mexico. AT&T’s products and services are also available at a number of other authorized dealers and national retail locations.
