AT&T* announced that global chemical giant Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd., based in Japan, has selected AT&T as its global communications provider.

AT&T's global network and world-class portfolio of IP-based products and services will help Sumitomo improve productivity, accelerate decision making and achieve cost reductions across worldwide operations.

Sumitomo Chemical supplies a wide range of products globally in its six business sectors: Basic Chemicals, Petrochemicals & Plastics, Fine Chemicals, IT-related Chemicals, Agricultural Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals. Sumitomo Chemical has been expanding its operation globally and is undertaking a number of global business ventures, including the Rabigh Project for the construction and operation of a world-scale refining and petrochemical complex in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia. To keep pace with the growth, Sumitomo Chemical is moving to a consistent and global IT and communications policy, enabling the Group to improve efficiency and productivity.

Sumitomo Chemical chose AT&T because AT&T was able to offer Sumitomo a consistent global network covering the Middle East, Southeast Asia and China. Sumitomo Chemical benefited from access to AT&T global network to deliver cost effective, consistent, secure and highly available services.

In addition, AT&T delivered remote access and managed security solutions which included AT&T Network-based Firewall and AT&T Web Security.

In the second phase of the agreement, AT&T and Sumitomo plan to extend the connectivity to the Middle East.

"Sumitomo is committed to expanding its business globally. A seamless, agile and optimized communications platform is critical to Sumitomo's long term development," said Hisashi Shimoda, managing executive officer of Corporate Planning & Coordination Office for Sumitomo Chemical welcomed today's announcement. "AT&T is providing a solid technology foundation to support our business which will enable us to accelerate the change we need on a global basis.
