To address the growing demand for advanced wireless data products and services in the state of Maine, AT&T* today announced that its 2009 wireless network enhancement plans are on target at the mid-way point in the year, with 10 out of 15 planned new cell sites now on air.

These new cell sites - located in Hampden, Wells, Hiram, Lewiston, Lisbon, Hermon, Brewer, York, Falmouth and Holden - build upon AT&T’s overall expansion in the region, which included the addition of 8 new cell sites last year in Auburn, Wiscasset, Orland, Orno, Cape Elizabeth, Berwick, Shapleigh and Winterport. From 2006 to 2008, AT&T’s total capital investment in its Maine technology infrastructure was nearly $70 million.

“AT&T is creating economic opportunity in Maine by expanding critical wireless access, providing faster and better options for everything from reaching emergency services to conducting business to sharing information with family and friends,” said Governor John E. Baldacci. “Ultimately, an expanded wireless infrastructure is a valuable resource that will help grow the economy and quality of life."

“Having access to dependable wireless coverage in more places across Maine has become increasingly important to our state both for safety and convenience,” said U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over telecommunication issues. “Continued investments by AT&T and other providers not only allows instant connectivity to work, family and friends but will also ensure local Maine businesses have adequate access to the necessary advanced wireless services that help them drive economic growth.”

Last year AT&T launched its 3G mobile broadband network in key parts of the state. Customers in Portland, South Portland, New Gloucester, Gray, Westbrook, Gorham, Cape Elizabeth, Raymond, Brunswick, Cumberland, Freeport, Windham, Yarmouth, North Yarmouth, Scarborough, Falmouth, West Bath, Topsham, Woolwich, Kittery, Wells, Saco, Sanford, Arundel, North Berwick, South Berwick, Biddeford, Hollis Center, Lyman, York, Kennebunk, Eliot, Buxton, Alfred, Old Orchard Beach can now benefit from AT&T’s 3G network – which opens the door to a new era of mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content, including the simultaneous sharing of voice and live video.

AT&T’s 3G wireless network is available in nearly 350 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. and is ranked as the nation’s fastest according to data compiled by leading independent research firms. Based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies, which includes GSM and UMTS, AT&T’s wireless network is the most open and widely used wireless network platform in the world. As a result, only AT&T can offer 3G data roaming in more than 70 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 200 countries, in addition to AT&T’s continuously expanding U.S. 3G footprint.

In addition to AT&T’s ongoing network investments, AT&T recently introduced a new hands-on interactive store design in Portland located at 211 Marginal Way – the only one of its kind in the state that allows customers to experience products in a try-before-you-buy retail environment.

“Whether checking e-mail, uploading video or using award winning applications like AT&T Navigator, today’s wireless customers want to make the most of their mobile experience,” added Steve Krom, vice president and general manager for AT&T New England. “From road warriors to texting teens, twice as many Smartphone users in the U.S. have chosen AT&T over any other wireless carrier. We have something for everyone.” AT&T has 9 retail wireless locations in Maine located in Auburn, Brunswick, Ellsworth, Portland, Saco, Scarborough, South Portland and Windham. AT&T’s wireless products and services are available in national retailers including Radio Shack, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart and at authorized retail locations across the region and online at www.att.com/wireless.
