American Security Logistics Selects AT&T to Wirelessly Connect Devices for Tracking Prized Possessions, from People to Pallets
First Application Will be Exclusive Live Global Tracking of AIRDEX Cargo Pallet Shipments
Las Vegas, Nevada, Dallas, Texas, March 24, 2010
American Security Logistics (ASL) today announced an agreement with AT&T* to wirelessly connect a series of location based tracking devices that can be used to help keep tabs on an array of valuables – from people to pets to pallets.
First up is an application to track the location and ongoing movement of cargo shipments. With the connected device, American Security Logistics will offer monitoring of high-value cargo shipments through precise GPS location, speed and selected conditional data. Placed exclusively into an AIRDEX™ ultra-light shipping pallet, the connected responder will provide global visibility of individual pallet locations and operating conditions through satellite and a 24-hour-a-day management information service bureau. Data will be delivered to the information service bureau across AT&T’s nationwide network.
Devices for pet tracking, child safety and Alzheimer’s patient monitoring are in development and American Security Logistics expects to launch them in the near future.
“Businesses and consumers shipping valuable assets often face tremendous anxiety about the efficient management of their property and related human resources,” said Stephen Rybar, American Security Logistics. “A wirelessly connected tracking device installed in an AIRDEX shipping pallet will help alleviate a lot of these concerns for property owners who might otherwise lose sight of their assets as soon as they are shipped off. AT&T’s wireless network is the ideal solution to keep tabs on shipped property.”
The system will enable the first cost-effective, live connection with high value or mission-critical shipments at the pallet-level. Shippers can not only make live inquiry of the precise physical location and environmental conditions of a pallet, but also have the options of programming “geo-fences” that limit where the system is “live” and the allowable physical locations where their cargo is permitted to enter or leave.
“There is a strong desire within many industries to keep track of valuable property once it ships from a facility and the most economical way to do this is through a tracking device connected to a nationwide wireless network,” said Glenn Lurie, president of emerging devices, resale and partnerships, AT&T. “It’s going to equip a property owner with timely logistics and peace of mind. We look forward to expanding these services to include other prized possessions, including pets and loved ones.”
While high-cost tracking equipment and services have been available for military and sea-freight containers for a number of years, only bar-code and RFID event scanning devices have been practical for tracking individual pallet shipments.
A connected pallet also helps address safety concerns within the food and pharmaceutical markets where tracking and traceability are critical.
Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. The connected pallets will be available in the United States within the coming months.
