AT&T Labs Researcher Alicia Abella Named To the Top Five 2010 Women of the Year by HispanicBusiness Magazine
Abella Honored for Her Research and Community Leadership
Florham Park, New York, April 27, 2010
AT&T today announced that Alicia Abella, Executive Director of Innovative Services Research at AT&T Labs, was named one of the Top Five 2010 Women of the Year by HispanicBusiness Magazine. This prestigious award celebrates the contributions of Hispanic women to the business and their communities.
HispanicBusiness Magazine recognized Abella for her technical skills and expertise, as well as her drive, vision, and research leadership. Abella’s contributions have helped change the way people interact with each other and the services they use. Her work on dialog systems for voice interfaces was her entrée into a domain of applications that represents a substantial part of AT&T’s production activities. Her research helps AT&T build, evaluate, understand, and improve its people-facing services, particularly applications that use collaboration or sharing. Additionally, Abella holds multiple patents for dialog management technologies.
“Alicia’s passion to drive innovation and help people connect inspires her colleagues,” said Keith Cambron, president of AT&T Labs. “We’re proud of her contributions as a researcher, leader, and mentor at AT&T.”
In naming her among the Top Five Women of the Year, HispanicBusiness Magazine noted Abella’s contributions as a mentor of young women and Hispanics in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). She serves as vice president of the Young Science Achievers Program and recently hosted students as part of National Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. She is also the chair of the AT&T Labs Fellowship Program that has been graduating doctoral women and underrepresented minorities for more than 35 years.
“I am honored to be recognized alongside this extraordinary group of women,” said Abella. “I am proud that AT&T is helping reach and connect the next generation of innovators.”
Based at the Florham Park lab in New Jersey, Dr. Abella leads a research team that specializes in data analysis, user interfaces, IPTV, mobile services, collaborative and voice technologies. Her work has also been recognized by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, and the Hispanic Engineering National Achievement Awards Conference.
