AT&T Brings Captel Service to Michigan Consumers
Captioned Telephone Empowers Hard of Hearing Consumers to Communicate Independently
Detroit, Michigan, July 20, 2006
AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) announced yesterday that CapTel products are now available to customers in Michigan. CapTel is a new technology, developed by Ultratec, Inc., that allows individuals with hearing loss to view word-for-word captions of their telephone conversations. This device is perfect for individuals who have good speech but do not hear well over the phone.
"AT&T is Michigan's approved Telecommunications Relay Provider, said Gail Torreano, president of AT&T Michigan. Since 1991, we have operated the Michigan Relay Center, allowing hearing persons and deaf individuals to communicate by telephone. The Relay Center has taken nearly 20 million incoming calls since its inception and we are pleased to introduce CapTel as the next step in providing the latest technology to our consumers. Thus far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, 125 phones have been ordered and more than 2,000 calls have been made using this technology in the past two weeks."
AT&T's provision of CapTel includes 2-Line CapTel service. 2-Line CapTel service truly enhances the functional equivalency and quality of CapTel service. 2-Line CapTel benefits users because calls are direct between parties. 2-Line CapTel also supports enhancements that users have purchased from their local telephone company, including call waiting and automatic callback (*69). Another advantage is that captions can be turned on or off at any time during the call. This means that CapTel users can get captions on any call at any time, no matter where the call is coming from. Users also benefit because captioning is available on emergency 911 calls and there is no separate telephone number for voice callers to remember.
"Thank you so much to AT&T Michigan for supporting this new communication technology," said Chris Hunter, director of the Division on Deaf and Hard of Hearing. "We've come a long way in our quest for telephone access. We started with teletypewriters to carry news and messages, which then evolved into TTY. Then we had amplified phones and the Michigan Relay Center, but we are most excited that CapTel has finally arrived in Michigan."
CapTel phones are available for a limited time only for just $99 (normally a retail value of $495). This offer comes with a 90-day trial period, which guarantees that if the customer is not entirely happy with CapTel, he or she can return the phone within three months for a full refund.
