Send, Receive, or Delete a Text Message (SMS) with the RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 using Handheld Software Version 6.0

RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 Keypad Layout
   
Prerequisites
Verify the device displays at least two bars of signal.

Send a text message (SMS)
NOTE: To toggle between the on screen keyboard and the keypad, open or close the slider.

  1. Scroll to and select the Text Messages icon  (to select, press the trackpad or tap the screen).
  2. Press the Menu key, then select Compose Text Message.
      
      
  3. Enter the 10-digit mobile number of the recipient in the "To" field.
    NOTE: If sending a message to an international number, enter "011" or enter a "+" followed by the correct country code and number. (Example: "011441234567" or "+441234567"). 
      
    • If sending a text message to a contact from the address book, type in the name and select the desired contact.
      NOTE: BES users can select Lookup to search the corporate global address list (GAL).
        
        
    • If multiple numbers are associated with the contact, scroll to and select the desired number.
         
       
  4. OPTIONAL:  To add more recipients, enter the 10 digit mobile number or type the desired name to add a contact from the address book in the "To" field.
     
      
  5. Scroll to the message body, then enter the desired text.
    NOTE: To insert an emoticon, scroll to and select the emoticons icon.
     
      
  6. To send the message, press the Menu key, then select Send.
    NOTE: Alternatively, press the Enter key.
      
       
  7. Verify the message is sent to the network.
    NOTE: Refer to message status icon for a comprehensive list of messaging indicators.
    Messaging indicators
    Icon Description
    Message is being sent.
    Message is pending. (will be sent later)
    Message was sent successfully to the network.
    Message returned, transmission error.

Receive a text message (SMS)

  1. Scroll to and select the Text Messages icon  (to select, press the trackpad or tap the screen).
    NOTE: Text (SMS) and Picture (MMS) messages may be configured to display in the Messages inbox.
  2. New text messages will be displayed with the unread SMS icon . Scroll to and select the desired message to open it.
     
     
  3. The message will be displayed.
      

Delete a text message (SMS)

  1. Scroll to and select the Text Messages icon  (to select, press the trackpad or tap the screen).
  2. Scroll to and highlight the desired message to delete.
     
  3. Press the Menu key, then select Delete.
    NOTE:  Alternatively, tap the Delete Message icon  on the screen.
      
      
  4. The desired message will be deleted.

If unable to send a text message (SMS), troubleshoot accordingly

  1. Verify the "Network to Send Over" option is set to Circuit Switched.
  2. Verify the message center number is programmed correctly.
  3. Turn the power off and back on.
  4. Verify that SMS blocking and other dialing restrictions are disabled.
  5. Verify the firewall settings are not configured to block incoming SMS messages.
  6. Perform Send/Receive steps again.
  7. Check for device issues and error messages.
