Configure a Wi-Fi Network Connection Profile with the RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 using Handheld Software Version 6.0

IMPORTANT:  Some hotspots are free to use, while others require payment.  A captive portal will open in the browser to specify payment options and/or security credentials.  Payment options or security credentials may be required to access the public network (hotspot) and may vary depending on the network provider. Please contact the Wi-Fi network provider for more information.

Prerequisites

• Turn the Wi-Fi signal on
• RIM BlackBerry data rate plan

Connect to a Hotspot or Open Wi-Fi Network
NOTE: By default, when a new Wi-Fi profile is created it will appear at the bottom of the Wi-Fi profile list.

1. On the Home screen, open the All tray, then scroll to and select the Manage Connections icon  (to select, press the trackpad or tap the screen).
2. Scroll to and select Set Up Wi-Fi Network.
    
    
3. The device will scan for available Wi-Fi networks.  Scroll to and select the desired Wi-Fi network to connect to.
    
    
4. The device will connect to the selected Wi-Fi network.
   NOTE: Some Wi-Fi networks may require authentication.  Please contact the Wi-Fi network provider for assistance with configuration and settings specifc to the network.
    
    
5. A checkmark will be displayed next to the connected Wi-Fi network.
    
    
6. The network name will be displayed on the home screen.
    

Manually Connect to a Wi-Fi Network or Connect using Wi-Fi Protected Setup

1. On the Home screen, open the All tray, then scroll to and select the Manage Connections icon  (to select, press the trackpad or tap the screen).
2. Scroll to and select Other ways to connect.
    
     
3. Scroll to and select the desired option:
    
• Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS): Use this method to connect to a Wi-Fi network without having to enter a password.  A compatible router or wireless access point is required for Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).  Scroll to and select the desired setup method:
• Press button on router
1. Press the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on the router. 
   NOTE: Please contact the manufacturer of the Wi-Fi access point/wireless router for assistance.
2. On the device, scroll to and select Start.
    
    
3. "Searching..." will be displayed.  The device will search and configure the Wi-Fi connection.
   
     
• Enter PIN into router
1. The device will search for available Wi-Fi networks and generate a PIN.
    
    
2. On the administration screen of the router or access point, enter the PIN.
     
• Manually Connect to Network: Use this method to manually enter the Wi-Fi network credentials. 
  NOTE:  Please contact the Wi-Fi network provider for assistance with configuration and settings specifc to the network.
1. Enter the SSID then scroll to and select Next.
    
    
2. Scroll to and select the desired Security Type.
    
    
3. Enter the key and then scroll to and select Save and Connect.
    
    
4. The device will connect to the desired Wi-Fi network.

If unable to configure a Wi-Fi network connection profile

1. Verify Wi-Fi network status.
2. If unable to detect connection information, perform a Site Survey to determine the connection information.
3. If unable to configure a network connection profile, please escalate accordingly for assistance with configuration and settings specifc to the network:
• If troubleshooting a corporate network, please contact your IT/System Administrator.
• If troubleshooting a home network, please contact the manufacturer of the Wi-Fi access point/wireless router.
• If troubleshooting a public network (hotspot), please contact the Wi-Fi network provider.
