SIM card compatibility overview
You should already have the correct type SIM card if you recently purchased it new from AT&T or an authorized retailer. If you are using a SIM card from some other source or if you moved an active SIM card to a new device, check the SIM number to make sure it is compatible.

Main steps

Check SIM number to verify compatibility
The SIM number is on the credit card sized SIM holder and on the SIM card itself. If your SIM card is active, be sure to turn off your device before removing it. To verify SIM card compatibility, examine the SIM number:
  • Compatible SIM - If the ninth and tenth digits of the SIM number are 25, 26, 27, or 28, your SIM card is compatible.
  • Incompatible SIM - If the ninth and tenth digits are 21, 22, 23, or 24 you need a new SIM card.

For example:
  • 89014103279999999999 - Compatible
  • 89014103249999999999 - Not compatible

Additional steps

Replace SIM card
If you need a new SIM card, you have several options to replace it, but only the account holder or authorized user can order and activate a new SIM card:
  • Take the device to an AT&T company store to have the SIM card replaced at no charge. For fastest service, make a store appointment online.
  • If there is no AT&T company store in your area, you can take the device to an authorized retailer or other retail location that sells AT&T wireless services. However, not all retail locations stock SIM cards and retailers may charge a fee for the new SIM card.
  • Call Customer Service at 800.331.0500 (GoPhone customers call 800.901.9878) and we will ship a free SIM card to the physical address on the account. When you receive the new SIM card, the account holder or an authorized user will need to call Customer Service to complete the activation.
