AT&T U-Verse High Speed Internet Subscribers: 10 Million and Counting
Dallas, Texas, November 15, 2013
More than 10 million customers now subscribe to AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet service – a major achievement in the company’s ongoing effort to bring IP broadband access to more people.
“This latest milestone shows how U-verse is helping transform AT&T into a premier IP broadband company,” said Lori Lee, senior executive vice president, AT&T Home Solutions. As of 3Q 2013, total U-verse high speed Internet subscribers represented about 60 percent of all wireline broadband subscribers, compared with 43 percent in the year-earlier quarter.
The growth is due in part to AT&T’s Project Velocity IP — its multi-billion dollar, three-year investment plan to improve its wireless and wireline IP networks. Since announcing Project VIP one year ago, the company has added about 2.5 million broadband customer locations. The plan calls for expanding IP broadband to reach about 57 million customer locations by the end of 2015.
The plan also calls for Internet speed upgrades. Earlier this year, AT&T rolled out U-verse High Speed Internet Power with up to 45 Mbps download speeds in 79 markets. And the company plans to raise speeds up to 75 and 100 Mbps in the future.
“Our broadband expansion project is bringing the benefits of high-speed Internet to more consumers,” Lee said. “Those benefits range from making education more accessible and affordable, to stoking a more powerful growth engine for the economy and innovation.”
AT&T saw strong growth in third quarter 2013, in which it reported 9.7 million high speed Internet subscribers and 5.3 million TV subscribers. Total U-verse revenue grew 28 percent in the third quarter, compared with the same quarter a year earlier. The company has built a $12 billion annualized revenue stream from scratch in just seven years.
U-verse stands apart because it is 100 percent IP-based. For example, it can combine services like video and web content, personalize the TV experience and quickly adapt to trends and changing needs. AT&T’s fiber optic-based network delivers the service. U-verse was the first IP-based TV service in the country, and is the fastest-growing TV service in the U.S.**
U-verse customers also have access to new and creative apps that bring their TV, broadband, wireless and home phone services together.
AT&T U-verse received the Women’s Choice Award and was named “America’s Best For Home Internet Service Provider.” AT&T U-verse TV was named the Frost & Sullivan Video Company of the Year. U-verse has also been honored with numerous innovation awards. For additional information on AT&T U-verse – or to find out if it’s available in your area – visit www.att.com/u-verse.
