Springfield Urban League Receives $25,000 AT&T Grant to Help Prepare African-Americans for Careers in Technology

Expanded Digital Career Academy to Provide Springfield Residents With 21st Century Career Skills

Springfield, Illinois, November 16, 2006

The Springfield Urban League today announced it will receive a $25,000 AT&T grant to support technology-career-development opportunities for African-Americans in Springfield by enhancing the organization's Digital Career Academy. The academy provides basic and intermediate technology- skills training, career counseling, internships and job-placement opportunities.

The Springfield grant is part of a $1.6 million dollar AT&T Foundation grant to the National Urban League, which will fund 16 new or expanded Digital Career Academies across the country. Funding for the National Urban League is part of the company's three-year, $100 million AT&T AccessAll initiative to provide technology access to underserved communities.

"Many of the fastest-growing careers in America require computer skills and focus on the technology industry," said Beverly Gibson, Springfield Urban League Executive Vice President. "The Digital Career Academy will help us ensure that African-Americans in Springfield are prepared to compete successfully in today's technology-driven job market."

The Digital Career Academy program builds on the success of a 2004 AT&T Foundation grant initiative, which provided $1,070,000 to the National Urban League to create technology academies in 11 other cities nationwide. Through the program, the Urban League provided information-technology career-training in IT administration, video-game programming, 3-D animation, Internet radio and computer programming.

The Springfield Urban League is one of five new grant recipients this year. The other 15 new and existing Digital Career Academies utilizing the AT&T Foundation grant for technology training programs include:

  • Greater Sacramento Urban League, in California
  • Los Angeles Urban League, in California
  • Urban League of Greater Hartford, Inc., in Connecticut
  • Urban League of Champaign County, in Illinois
  • Urban League of Madison County, Inc., in Indiana
  • Grand Rapids Urban League, in Michigan
  • Minneapolis Urban League, in Minnesota
  • Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc.
  • Akron Community Service Center and Urban League, in Ohio
  • Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City, Inc.
  • Columbia Urban League, in South Carolina
  • Houston Area Urban League, in Texas
  • Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas
  • Urban League of Racine and Kenosha, Inc., in Wisconsin

The $1.6 million grant to the National Urban League is part of the AT&T AccessAll signature philanthropic initiative, a landmark three-year $100 million program that connects families and communities with technology tools that can improve lives. The program builds on the AT&T Foundation's existing investment in technology for the underserved, which totals nearly $83 million.

The AT&T Foundation supports nonprofit organizations and projects that increase inclusion and create opportunities for diverse populations. In 2005, AT&T and the AT&T Foundation contributed more than $21 million and supported nearly 800 organizations and programs that enrich and strengthen diverse communities nationwide.
