AT&T Cuts Ribbon on Joplin Call Center
Elected Officials, Civic Leaders and AT&T Executives Celebrate the Opening of the $19.3 Million Facility
Joplin, Missouri, November 13, 2007
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced the completion and official opening of the AT&T wireless business customer call center in Joplin. Mayor Jon Tupper joined state legislators and AT&T executives to cut the ribbon at the new facility, which will house more than 700 employees.
Employees at the new center will provide customer care for AT&T's wireless business-to-business customers from a 75,000-square-foot customer care center at 4001 S. Richard Joseph Blvd. Currently, 540 individuals are trained and on the job; another 200 will be hired by January 2008.
"As the nation's leading wireless provider, we are excited to be here today announcing the official opening of our new wireless customer care call center," said Maria Phillips, executive director, Business Customer Services for AT&T's wireless business-to-business organization. "At AT&T, the customer experience is our No. 1 priority, and we are confident that the employees in this new call center will deliver on that."
The new $19.3 million center has an estimated economic impact of more than $25 million. The company expects that the new jobs will result in an annual payroll of nearly $13 million, with jobs that include customer service, information technology, human resources and management.
Gov. Matt Blunt recently announced that AT&T will receive $1.8 million in tax credits over five years for the new call center. AT&T's financial investment, the quality of the jobs and the location of the center — in one of the state's Enhanced Enterprise Zones — qualifies it for the tax credits.
AT&T invested more than $350 million in 2006 to deliver advanced Internet Protocol (IP)-based business communications services, wireless innovation, high speed Internet access and leading voice services to consumers across Missouri. Additionally, AT&T employs more than 14,000 people in Missouri and sustains a payroll of more than $850 million a year. The company has a long history of serving the Joplin area — AT&T and its predecessor companies have been doing business there since the 1880s.
"We commend Governor Blunt and state and local officials for helping to create a favorable environment for investment and job expansion," said Kevin Vossen, director, External Affairs for AT&T Missouri. "In recent years, legislators have passed several progressive laws that recognize the changing world of telecommunications."
Missouri state Rep. Ron Richard agreed: "I am very proud of the recent legislation passed, which provides the incentives necessary to attract a business of this caliber. Of course, I am equally proud of the partnership among the governments of Joplin, Jasper and Newton County and the Joplin Chamber of Commerce to bring AT&T's new call center to Joplin."
"This new facility is a huge economic development opportunity that will give a real boost to our efforts to attract and grow good jobs," state Sen. Gary Nodler said. "The benefit will be felt throughout southwestern Missouri. In the Legislature, we are constantly working to bring these kinds of opportunities to our state, and it's good to see that hard work pay off in an announcement such as this."
AT&T's wireless business organization provides wireless services to more than 95 of the Fortune 100 companies. The organization also provides services for more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 and about 1,800 federal, state and local government agencies.
