AT&T Announces Recipients of $1.5 Million in Grants to Deliver Educational Content and Enhance Learning Opportunities in Communities Nationwide

Competitive Grant Program Helps Nonprofits Integrate Wireless Technology Into Educational Outreach Efforts

San Antonio, Texas, February 15, 2008

The AT&T Foundation — the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) — today announced that it has awarded $1.5 million in competitive grants to 70 qualifying nonprofit organizations across the country to help integrate wireless communications technology into educational outreach projects.

The one-time, education-focused, wireless technology grants range from $2,500 to $25,000 for wireless applications and hardware. They were awarded to organizations for projects designed to enhance the delivery of educational tools and services through wireless technology in settings that engage youth and adults in lifelong learning. Each project was required to have a particular focus on targeting underserved populations, including racial and ethnic groups, low-income populations, seniors, youth and/or people with disabilities.

"Mobile technology can maximize the educational efforts of nonprofits by providing opportunities for people of all ages to learn anytime and anywhere," said Laura Sanford, president, AT&T Foundation. "AT&T has a strong history of supporting organizations that incorporate innovative applications of technology to help students achieve success."

Below are examples of the 2007 wireless technology grant recipients and their projects:

  • Foundation for California Community Colleges (Sacramento, Calif.) will purchase wireless laptop computers to expand participation in California High School Exit Exam online preparation courses.
  • Jackson State University (Jackson, Miss.) will establish Wi-Fi networking at JSU's College of Lifelong Learning to enable adult students to retrieve class lectures, course materials and other assignments through podcasts, reducing the time spent traveling to campus to receive face-to-face instruction.
  • Wildflower Donor Inc. (Austin, Texas) will develop a Spanish version of the "Guide by Cell" educational audio tours and podcasts of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's botanical gardens for the growing Hispanic and international community.
  • Museum of African American History (Boston) will create and develop a wireless audio tour of the Black Heritage Trail and the Black Entrepreneurs exhibit. High school teens from the internship program will research and create the educational audio tours.
