Get to know eSIM
Learn about the benefits of an eSIM and how to activate one for your phone.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM that connects some newer devices to the AT&T network.

 

Why use an eSIM?

An eSIM gives you more flexibility to manage your wireless plan and eSIM-compatible device.

  • You download an eSIM and activate it, so you don’t have to manage a physical SIM card.
  • For Apple devices with eSIM capabilities, you don’t have to order a card or go to a store to get one.
  • Some devices with eSIM capabilities can support more than one phone number.

 

How do I transfer an eSIM?

You can transfer your eSIM if both phones are eSIM compatible. Here’s how:

  1. 1. Start at Bring Your own Device.
  2. 2. Choose Move my number to a different device.
  3. 3. Select Continue, then sign in if asked.
  4. 4. Follow the prompts to complete your transfer.

 

How do I use an eSIM?

You download the eSIM to your device over Wi-Fi®.

Choose your device type for instructions.
  • iPhone

    While setting up your iPhone over Wi-Fi®, your eSIM might download automatically or you might be prompted to install an AT&T cellular plan. If you have wireless service bars or you can make a call, you’re all set.

    Still don’t have service? Try this:

    1.  Connect to Wi-fi.
    2.  Swipe down from the top of your screen to open your notifications.
    3.  Choose the AT&T Cellular Plan Ready to be Installed notification
    4.  Select Continue.

    Don’t see a notification? You might have to activate your iPhone first.

    Activating a new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max? You may need to update your software.

    Did you receive an eSIM activation card with a QR code from AT&T? Learn how to activate with the QR code.
  • Samsung smartphone

    You’ll need a Wi-Fi connection on your phone and an eSIM activation card with a QR code from AT&T. To download your eSIM, open your camera app, point the camera at the QR code, and follow the prompts.

    If you can’t scan the QR code with your camera, follow these steps:

    1.  Open Settings. 
    2.  Select Connections. 
    3.  Select SIM card manager. 
    4.  Select Add mobile plan. 
    5.  Follow the prompts to scan the QR code on your eSIM activation card from AT&T.

    If your Samsung smartphone still doesn’t have wireless service, activate your device.

  • Google smartphone

    Make sure you have an eSIM activation card with a QR code from AT&T.

    Follow these steps on your phone:

    1.  Connect to Wi-Fi®. 
    2.  Open Settings. 
    3.  Choose Network & Internet.
    4.  Select the plus sign (+) next to Mobile network.
    5.  Select Download a SIM instead.
    6.  Follow the prompts to scan the QR code on your eSIM activation card from AT&T.

    If your phone still doesn’t have wireless service, activate your device.

  • Other Android phone

    Make sure you have an eSIM activation card with a QR code from AT&T. Then, follow these steps on your phone:

    1.  Connect to Wi-Fi®. 
    2.  Open Settings and look for Network, Connections, Mobile, or similar.
    3.  Find the option to download a SIM or eSIM.
    4.  Follow the prompts to scan the QR code on your eSIM activation card from AT&T.
