Your moving checklist
- 8 weeks before· Create a file or binder to keep all of your estimates, receipts, and a running inventory of all the items you’re moving.
· Research moving companies and get each quote in writing. If you’re moving to another state, make sure the moving company has a USDOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) number.
· Arrange for medical, dental, and school records to be transferred to your new district. - 6 weeks before· Buy boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and markers.
· Start packing. Begin with items you don’t use very often, and label the side of each box with what’s inside and what room it belongs in.
· Sort through the items you don’t want to move and decide what you’re going to donate, sell, or throw away.
- 4 weeks before· Choose your mover and confirm the date, cost, and destination address.
· Schedule your utility service changes. Try to overlap connections by a day or two so you have electricity, water, and connectivity in both your old home and your new one. It’s easy to get connected at your new home whether you already have AT&T services or you’re setting up service for the first time.
· Submit your change-of-address form, either online at www.usps.com or in-person at your local post office. - 2 weeks before· Notify your bank, credit card company, and your employer’s HR department of your upcoming move and your new address details.
· Pre-register your internet service by downloading the Smart Home Manager app; then select New user. Get ready for your service installation appointment by watching the video.
· Get your car ready for the move, especially if you’re traveling a long way to your new home, by scheduling a service appointment.
· Begin to reduce your food supplies. Use up as much as you can from the freezer and pantry and consider donating dried goods to a local food bank. - 1 week before· Review your moving plans to make sure you have all the correct information and reconfirm the details with your moving company.
· Aim to complete packing a few days before the move so you have plenty of time to box up any items you’ve forgotten. Don’t forget outdoor furniture and equipment.
· Pack a box of essentials—toiletries, a change of clothes, charging cords, a box cutter, garbage bags—you’ll need the first few days in your new home.

- Should I cancel my DIRECTV or AT&T service before I move?You don't have to cancel your service when you move, especially when it's easier to just transfer your old service to your new address.
- How do I transfer my service?It only takes a few minutes to transfer your current service, or to choose another plan if your old one isn't available at your new address. Contact a DIRECTV or U-verse moving specialist at 800-288-2020. Once you tell us your preferred installation date, you will receive an email confirmation in 24 hours.
- What if I'm a DIRECTV customer moving to a condo, apartment, or renting?If you are moving to an apartment, condo, or rental home, you will need to provide the installer with a completed Landlord Approval Form before we can install and activate your service.
- Can I make changes to my service when I move?Of course! You can upgrade or change your current service when placing your move through one of our moving specialists at 800-288-2020.
- Does transferring my service cost me anything?If you have U-verse TV, Internet, or Home phone, activation fees are waived depending on your current service plan. If there is an activation fee, it would be the same as when you had your service installed the first time.
For DIRECTV customers, a new 12-month term is required for service at new address. Equipment upgrades require a new 24-month commitment. Early termination fee of $20/month. For each month remaining on agreement, equipment non-return and additional fees may apply.
