Learn how to submit a legal name change request.

Good to know

We can’t process legal name change requests over the phone or in AT&T stores. However, AT&T stores may be able to help with a minor name change, like your account name having a typo. To change the name on your AT&T account, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are the account holder requesting changes to the billing name or authorized users
  • Your account has been active for more than 30 days
  • Your legal name change is for a legally qualifying reason
  • Your requested new name matches your new legal name, as shown on a valid photo ID

If you are trying to change the account’s billing owner to a different person, learn how to transfer billing responsibility.

Submit a legal name change request

Mail a letter that includes the following information:

  • The date you’re requesting the name change
  • Your AT&T account number (or for wireless customers, your AT&T cell phone numbers)
  • A current phone number we can use to reach you
  • A valid return address, preferably not a P.O. Box
  • Your name as it appears on your account currently, as well your full new legal name
  • Supporting documents showing your previous legal name (which matches your current AT&T bill) and documents that show your new legal name. Examples include:
    • Marriage certificates
    • Divorce decree
    • Driver’s license
  • Your signature

Send your documents via U.S. mail to the address for your service (for AT&T wireless services, you can fax your documents).
