How to set up a Genie 2 Server

Replace your DVR with the new Genie 2

Follow these steps to set up your replacement Genie 2.

Exchange Genie receivers
  1. Disconnect and remove any adapters that connect to the cable cord on the back of your old Genie.
  2. Place your new Genie 2 next to your old Genie.
  3. Transfer all cables and accessories one at a time from the old Genie to the new one, connecting the power cord last.
  4. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.
  5. Power on your replacement Genie and your TV.
  6. Wait 3-4 minutes for the ADD CLIENT button on top of your Genie 2 to start flashing green.

Set up and activate your Genie 2

You may need your access card number, receiver ID, and model number. All are on the barcode sticker on the outside of the box your replacement receiver came in.

  1. Follow the guided setup screens on your TV.
  2. When you get to the Satellite Dish Setup screen, keep the default settings.
  3. Select Continue and follow the onscreen instructions to set up your Genie 2.
  4. Activate online or call our automated activation line at 800.388.6597
  5. Follow the prompts to activate your Genie 2.
  6. Activation tips:
    • If a message appears that asks you to program your remote control, follow onscreen instructions or learn how to program your remote control
    • If you’re replacing a Genie DVR and have a multi-room viewing/Whole-Home DVR service setup, you’ll need to set up your Genie 2 with your replacement Genie
    • To get the most out of your Genie receiver, make sure to connect your receiver to the Internet by pressing MENU > Connect Now and following the onscreen instructions.

Return old equipment

A return shipping label for your old receiver arrives with your Genie 2. Send the old equipment back to DIRECTV within 7 days to avoid the non-return fee of $135.
