Next steps after upgrading to AT&T Internet

While you wait for your new AT&T service installation, here are a few things you should know to help with your transition.

Confirmation and registration

Once you completed your upgrade order, take some time to confirm your order details, register your account, and learn how to manage your services at home and on-the-go.

Order confirmation
You'll get a summary of your order, along with a confirmation of your service activation or tech installation date. Make sure this info is correct.

Around the same time you’ll also receive a separate email or letter with the 4-digit passcode that you chose when you ordered your service. You’ll need this for registration so make sure to have it handy.

Register your AT&T Internet
You can register at before your installation day using your account number and 4-digit passcode. It’s a good idea to register with your existing AT&T user ID and password, so be sure to have them handy before you begin.
  • Forgot your user ID or password? No worries. Just go to myAT&T and select Forgot password? or Create one now in the sign-in area.
  • During registration you’ll be presented with the Internet Terms of Service which you have to accept to use the service. You can view them any time at

Welcome Center
Go to the AT&T Internet Welcome Center and we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about your new service.

Get a quick checklist (PDF, 140KB) to go through as you complete the process.

Activation and installation

Note: If you have a home security alarm or health monitoring system, we recommend professional installation due to certain technical issues that may arise during installation.

If you’re installing your new services on your own:
  • Track your equipment - When we ship your equipment, we’ll send you an email and voice message or text message with a link to track your package.
  • Wait for service activation - Your service will be activated by 2 p.m. on your service activation date.
  • Install your equipment - After your service activation, disconnect your AT&T DSL equipment and install your new Internet equipment using the provided instructions.

As a current customer upgrading your internet service, you'll experience limited downtime of your telephone line and Internet service. Your telephone service will be restored automatically. You'll need to connect the new equipment provided in your self-installation kit to restore your Internet service.

Want a technician to install your service instead? Call 800.288.2020 and enter the phone number associated with your account. Say I need to schedule an installation appointment for my Internet service when prompted. We'll make all the arrangements and explain the applicable charges.

Professional installation
If a technician will be installing your service:
  • Prior to your installation date - You'll receive appointment reminders (email and voice message or text) with the date and time the tech will install your new AT&T service.
  • On your installation date - You’ll receive another reminder about your appointment. When the tech arrives he or she will install your new equipment and help you through the registration process if you haven’t already registered.

During registration you’ll be presented with the Internet Terms of Service which you’ll have to accept to use the service. You can view them any time at

Need to change your appointment? We know schedules change. Sign in to see or change your appointment or call 800.288.2020 and say change installation.

Manage your account and learn about billing

With myAT&T you can manage your account anywhere, any time. Use myAT&T on your smartphone or tablet for easy access to your AT&T information anywhere you are. Download the myAT&T app.1
  • Check your order status - Find out where your order is, when your service(s) will arrive, and what your next steps are.
  • Check or change appointments - Find out when your technician will arrive or, if necessary, reschedule your appointment.
  • Manage all your accounts - If you have other AT&T services such as DIRECTV or home phone, link them with your new service to manage all your accounts in one place.

Your AT&T bills
Be on the lookout for your new bill and make sure to wrap up payments on your old services.
  • Look for your new bill - Once your new AT&T service is set up, you'll have a new account. This means you’ll receive a new bill for your upgraded service(s) that’s separate from your AT&T DSL and/or traditional voice service bill.
  • Pay your final bill for any current services if you’re not on AutoPay - You'll receive a final bill for any services you’re upgrading.

Note: If you have traditional home phone and didn’t upgrade to a digital phone service, you’ll continue to receive a separate bill for your AT&T home phone service.

Set up AutoPay
Make sure to set up new arrangements for AutoPay and pay the final bill for all your old services.

Any previous AutoPay arrangements won’t carry over to your new account. Sign in to myAT&T to manage AutoPay. If you need help managing your accounts, call us at 800.288.2020.
