How to transfer number from another carrier or AT&T PREPAID

Before transferring a number to AT&T wireless

Helpful tips

  • Don't cancel your existing service! We'll take care of that when you activate your new phone.
  • Contact the carrier or AT&T PREPAIDSM (formerly GoPhone®) so you know what charges may apply. You'll need to pay any outstanding balances. You may also have to pay an early termination fee.
  • We may charge a one-time transfer fee or an activation fee for each new line of service.

Confirm eligibility and info needed to begin the transfer

If the number is eligible to transfer, you’ll need to provide information about your current account to begin the transfer process. Any wrong information may delay the processing.

View a recent monthly phone bill or call your current carrier to verify:
  • Number you want to transfer
  • Account owner name and address
  • Account owner's Social Security number or Tax ID
  • PIN or password, if applicable

Start transferring your number

There are 2 ways to transfer a number to us:
  • Activate a new line with a number you're transferring from another carrier.
  • Replace your current AT&T number with one you're transferring from another carrier.
If you're replacing your AT&T number with one from another carrier, follow these steps:
  1. Go to account overview, and open the My wireless section.
  2. Scroll to My devices & add-ons and choose the device you want to transfer a number to.
  3. Select Manage my device.
  4. Under See device options, select See more device options.

Number transfer status and timeframes

Check transfer status

Go to Number transfer status and enter the number you’re transferring to AT&T. Follow the prompts to check transfer status.

Confirm transfer timeframes

When transferring your number from another wireless carrier or AT&T PREPAID:
  • If you start your number transfer in an AT&T store, your number will transfer to us within 1-3 business hours.
  • If you order your new phone or SIM card online or over the phone, your number transfer may take up to 3-5 business days to complete. Your old phone will still work until you activate your new AT&T phone or SIM card.
  • If you're transferring a non-wireless number, it'll take a minimum of 5-7 business days to complete.
