Learn about AT&T Mail features for people with disabilities

Find out how to access and navigate your email with a screen reader.

Choose compatible screen readers and browsers

  • NVDA 2011 (or higher) and Firefox® 3.6 (or higher)
  • NVDA 2011 (or higher) and Internet Explorer® 8 (or higher)
  • JAWS 12 (or higher) and Internet Explorer 8 (or higher)
  • JAWS 12 (or higher) and Firefox 3.6 (or higher)
  • Window-eyes version 7.2 (or higher)
  • Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader and Chrome

Your experience may depend on the browser and assistive technology version you use.

Use the classic version of AT&T Mail

Be sure to use the AT&T Mail classic version so your screen reader works. From your webmail inbox:
  1. Select the gear Gear icon and then More Settings.
  2. In the Personalize inbox section, select Switch to classic Mail.

Navigate email without a mouse

Don’t want to use a mouse to navigate your email? Use your keyboard and virtual cursor instead.

Keyboard tab and arrow keys
For example, when you compose an email, the To and CC fields are separate sections.
  • Press the Tab key (or Shift + Tab) to navigate between sections.
  • Use the arrow keys to move between items within a section. You can use the left or right arrow keys to move between buttons in a toolbar, or the up or down arrow keys to navigate between items in a list box.

Enter key

Pressing the Enter key is another way to select a tab list or list box.

Virtual cursor
AT&T Mail automatically turns your virtual cursor on or off. For example the virtual cursor:
  • Is off by default to make sure AT&T Mail responds to keyboard shortcuts when you navigate your inbox.
  • Automatically turns on when you read emails so you can do things like skip between headings.

Don't want to use your screen reader's virtual cursor?

No worries. You can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate your email.
