Data settings for non-AT&T Android device

Learn how to program your Android device with the correct AT&T APN and MMS data connection settings to use 4G (HSPA+)/4G LTE data services.

Verify SIM & data plan compatibility

Before changing the data settings, verify the device has a compatible SIM card and data plan. This may resolve data connection issues without requiring any changes to your data settings.

To verify SIM card compatibility:
  • You should already have the correct type SIM card if you recently purchased it new from AT&T or an authorized retailer.
  • If you are using a SIM card from some other source or if you moved an active SIM card to a new device, verify the SIM works with 4G (HSPA+)/4G LTE data.
To verify data plan compatibility:
  • If you moved an active SIM card to a new device and did not notify us of that change, your existing data plan might not be compatible.
  • To update the device information on the account and make any required plan changes, the account holder or authorized user can contact us

Program data settings for non-AT&T Android device

To use AT&T 4G (HSPA+) or 4G LTE data services, you may need to program your data settings for a compatible, non-AT&T Android™ device, like an unlocked device from another carrier or a device purchased directly from the manufacturer.

Some older Android smartphones may use the wap.cingular APN as the default AT&T setting. This APN no longer supports smartphone data connectivity.

To program an Android device with the correct settings to connect to AT&T data services:
  1. Access the Settings menu.
  2. Locate and select either Wireless & NetworksMore Networks, or Connections.
  3. Select Mobile Networks > Access Point Names.
  4. Locate and select the option to add a new APN. This is usually accessed by a + symbol on the screen or by tapping the menu button.
  5. Program each field using the settings below.
  6. Save the changes to return to the APN's menu and select the new APN.
