If the ‘Game of Thrones’ Realm Had Social Media and Smartphones…

As the final season of “Game of Thrones” draws to a close, social media continues to erupt around the show, its plot twists and the characters fans have come to know and love. With this in mind, we ran a consumer survey to explore how different characters might leverage today’s technologies, tools and online experiences. This is what we learned:

  • Who could use social media the most?
If the realm of “Game of Thrones” had social media, roughly one in five said either Jon Snow (21.7%) or Sansa Stark (21.3 %) could use social media the most, followed by Tyrion Lannister (16.2%), Daenerys Targaryen (15.6%), Jorah Mormont (12.7%) and Cersei Lannister (12.1%).
  • Who seems the most like an influencer?
Roughly one in four of Americans (26.2%) say Jon Snow would most likely be a social media influencer, followed by Sansa Stark (19.6%), Daenerys Targaryen (17.8%), Tyrion Lannister (14.3%) and Samwell Tarly (8.8%). Roughly 13% chose “other,” perhaps thinking of Lord Varys and his “little birds.”
  • Which character’s live stream would you watch?
It’s Arya Stark’s live stream that Americans would want to watch most. Over forty-three percent chose hers, followed by the hypothetical live streams of Brienne of Tarth (13.7%), Missandei (12.3%), Tormund Giantsbane (11.3%), Jorah Mormont (11.1%) and Samwell Tarly (8%).
  • Who seems most like a social troll?
New-ish power couple Cersei Lannister (29.2%) and Euron Greyjoy (26.4%) top the list of characters that seem most like social trolls, followed by Arya Stark (22.1%) and Melisandre (22.1%), who are tied for the number three spot.
  • Who would you “lurk” on social media?
On social, more Americans would lurk Jon Snow (28.2%) and Daenerys Targaryen (19.6%), followed by Jaime Lannister (17.8%), Sansa Stark (17%), Cersei Lannister (9.6%) and Tyrion Lannister (7.6%).
  • Who could use a smartphone the most?
Nearly one in four Americans (24.1%) say Jon Snow could use a smartphone the most, followed by Arya Stark (20%), Jaime Lannister (17%, Tyrion Lannister (16.6%), Daenerys Targaryen (11.5%) and Jorah Mormont (10.5%).
  • Which character would you block a call, text or social follow from in real life?
The Night King (28.2%) tops the list of characters Americans would block calls, texts or social follows from, followed by Iron Island usurper Euron Greyjoy (26.6%), Cersei Lannister (23.1%) and Melisandre (21.9%).
  • Which Game of Thrones House do you align with?
Our survey also shows where American’s allegiances are as we move closer to the final episode of the show: Close to half of respondents (49%) say they support House Stark, followed by House Targaryen (22.1%) and House Lannister (11.5%). And, roughly 17 percent said “other.” Maybe it was too hard to choose only one…?

If you’re a fan, you already know which characters you love most and which House you support, and there are a number of ways you can have some fun with that: You can find out which Game of Thrones House fits your personality with our interactive quiz. You can take your fan experience to new levels with recaps, articles, videos, interactive games and more right here.  And, you can celebrate the show through a variety of exclusive merchandise.

Since they don’t really have smartphones or social media in the realm, our favorite characters will have to rely on ravens, intuition, and in-real-life communications to navigate the challenges they face in the quest for the Iron Throne. Who will ultimately own it? Only time will tell….

About the Survey:
We ran an online survey of over 510 Americans, ages 18-65, on May 5, 2019.
