Is it better to buy a phone outright or buy a phone on an installment plan?

Buying a smartphone outright will reduce your monthly payments even if it’s a new iPhone or Samsung Galaxy series. However, the cost of buying a smartphone outright and buying on an installment plan are ultimately the same. That’s because AT&T offers 0% APR for 36 months for well-qualified customers with the AT&T Installment Plan . In fact, if you buy a smartphone that qualifies for a promotion requiring an installment plan, the cost of the phone on an installment plan may work out to be less than the cost of the smartphone bought outright (without the promotion). AT&T also offers the AT&T Installment Plan with AT&T Next Up Anytime . For an extra $10 per month, you can upgrade your cell phone anytime (after making your first payment) without having to worry about the remaining balance of your installment plan, so long as you turn in your current phone. Every year, or once you’ve paid off one-third of your phone’s cost, you’ll be eligible for our smartphone deals (maximum three upgrades in a 12-month period).
