The best internet for gaming has low latency, consistent speeds and enough bandwidth for downloads and other devices. Where available, AT&T Fiber with 5 GIG speed delivers our fastest residential internet, with equal upload and download speeds, ultra-low latency and consistent performance, even during peak hours, based on a wired connection to the gateway. Compare plans and speeds, then check which speeds are available at your address.

The speed you need depends on how you game. Online gameplay itself uses relatively little bandwidth, and your experience depends mostly on latency and a stable connection, while speed matters most for game downloads, streaming and other devices on your network. If you play fast, competitive games or share your internet with heavy users, you might want AT&T's 5 GIG Internet, our fastest plan. FCC guidance puts online gaming in the medium service tier (12-25 Mbps for two to three users or devices). Check which speeds are available at your address and see the guide to understanding internet speed.

Yes. AT&T Fiber offers a lot of benefits for gamers. AT&T Fiber with 5 GIG speed offers equal upload and download speeds, ultra-low latency, unlimited data and consistent performance, even during peak usage hours, based on a wired connection to the gateway. See AT&T Fiber and view the coverage map to see where it is built.

AT&T Internet Air can support online gaming for many households, with typical download speeds of 90-300 Mbps and upload speeds of 8-30 Mbps. It is wireless, so your experience depends on 5G signal strength at your address, hub placement and network conditions. For competitive gaming where low latency matters most, AT&T Fiber with a wired connection is the stronger option where available. See AT&T Internet Air or compare every home internet option.

The best Wi-Fi for gaming is a strong, low-interference connection. A wired Ethernet connection to your gateway is steadier than Wi-Fi, and on Wi-Fi the 5 GHz band is less prone to interference than 2.4 GHz. AT&T All-Fi provides your gateway and whole-home coverage, and Wi-Fi extenders can cover rooms far from the gateway. Upgrading to All-Fi Pro adds Wi-Fi 7 technology for an additional monthly charge. See things that block Wi-Fi signals. Pricing and promotions vary by address, so check availability to see current pricing and offers for your address.

Ping, or latency, is how long data takes to travel from your device to a game server and back, measured in milliseconds. Lower latency makes games feel more responsive. Fiber lines are not affected by the electrical interference that can affect copper wires, and AT&T Fiber has lower latency than cable and DSL internet. Your device, Wi-Fi conditions and the location of the game server also affect ping. AT&T Business Insights notes that ping above 150 ms causes noticeable lag and that under 50 ms is desirable for professional gaming. Read what ping is and how it affects gaming and how to improve network latency.

A few changes can make a noticeable difference. If your connection is slow at certain times of day, consider upgrading to an internet plan powered by AT&T Fiber, which stays consistently fast and has ultra-low latency, even during peak hours. Download the AT&T Smart Home Manager app to find weak Wi-Fi spots and improve performance. Move your gateway away from thick walls and metal, as described in things that block Wi-Fi signals, and see the guide to speeding up your home internet. Bundling Fiber with unlimited wireless adds Internet Backup, so if your internet goes down, your wireless data keeps you online.

Ethernet is the steadier choice. A wired connection to your gateway avoids the walls, distance and interference that can weaken Wi-Fi, which helps keep ping low and consistent. If your device is too far from the gateway for a cable, these steps help on Wi-Fi:

Connect to the 5 GHz network, which is less prone to interference than 2.4 GHz.

Move the gateway or your device so the signal passes through fewer walls.

Add a Wi-Fi extender near your gaming area, or connect the extender to the gateway with an Ethernet cable.

Pause large downloads and streams on other devices while you play.

Run an internet speed test on your gaming device and again at the gateway to see where speed drops.

Run an internet speed test. Test two things: your device speed, between your phone, tablet or computer and the internet, and your gateway speed, between your modem or Wi-Fi gateway and the AT&T network. If your internet runs at the proper speed but you still aren't getting the gaming performance you need, consider switching to an AT&T Fiber plan with a higher maximum speed.

Yes, with the right setup. When you have AT&T Fiber and an eligible unlimited AT&T wireless plan, Internet Backup is included at no extra cost, and if your internet goes down, your wireless data steps up to keep you connected. See the AT&T Guarantee for outage credits and internet and wireless bundles.

AT&T Turbo is an add-on for your AT&T wireless plan that is built for gamers on the go. It helps reduce lag and dropped frames when you play on your phone. It requires a compatible plan and 5G device, may take up to 15 minutes after purchase to apply, and coverage is not available everywhere.
