Phone line interference

Learn what causes phone line interference and how to get rid of it.

Learn about phone line interference

When talking on your business phone you may hear other conversations on the line. The interference may be caused by radio frequency signals from citizens band (CB) radios or AM/FM broadcast stations. Sometimes your telephone equipment can act like an antenna for these signals. The installation of a modular filter may help. You can find a modular filter at most stores selling telephone equipment. There are a few other things you can try to get rid of the interference.

Cordless phone
  1. Unplug the phone from the phone jack and AC outlet.
  2. Plug in another phone and place a call.
    • If the interference goes away, your cordless phone is the problem. Try changing the channel or frequency. If you can’t change the channel or frequency, have it repaired or replaced.
    • If the interference persists, the problem may be outside your of business. For help, call a repair center.

Corded phone
  1. Unplug the phone set from the phone jack.
  2. Plug in another corded phone set and place a call.
    • If the problem goes away, the problem phone set may need to be replaced.
    • If the interference persists, the problem may be outside of your business. For help, call a repair center.
