Is it better to buy a phone outright or buy a phone on an installment plan?

Accepted Answer

Buying a smartphone outright will reduce your monthly payments even if it’s a new iPhone or Samsung Galaxy series. However, the cost of buying a smartphone outright and buying on an installment plan are ultimately the same. That’s because AT&T offers 0% APR for 36 months for well-qualified customers with the AT&T Installment Plan. In fact, if you buy a smartphone that qualifies for a promotion requiring an installment plan, the cost of the phone on an installment plan may work out to be less than the cost of the smartphone bought outright (without the promotion). 

AT&T also offers the AT&T Installment Plan with AT&T Next Up Anytime. For an extra $10 per month, you can upgrade your cell phone anytime (after making your first payment) without having to worry about the remaining balance of your installment plan, so long as you turn in your current phone. Every year, or once you’ve paid off one-third of your phone’s cost, you’ll be eligible for our smartphone deals (maximum three upgrades in a 12-month period). If you’re new to AT&T, you can get AT&T Fiber service (where available) and save 20% per month on your internet bill when you add an eligible AT&T unlimited plan.¹ If you already have AT&T Wireless service, you can add AT&T Fiber service and save 20% per month on your internet bill. If you have AT&T Fiber and add new wireless service, you could be eligible to save 20% per month on your wireless plan.

Some customers may be eligible to save money on their monthly bill through the AT&T Signature Program, a discount program that offers benefits to eligible employees, students, and others associated with certain companies, universities, and organizations that have a qualifying service agreement with AT&T.
