Question 1

What are the benefits of upgrading to fiber internet?

Accepted Answer

AT&T Fiber optic internet offers speeds up to 5 GIG where available, equal upload and download speeds, unlimited data with no data caps, and more consistent performance during busy hours. It also includes a Wi-Fi gateway at no extra cost and standard AT&T ActiveArmor security features. With an eligible unlimited AT&T wireless plan, Internet Backup is included at no extra cost. Fiber optic cables are less affected by rain, snow and storms than some older technologies, though damage can still cause outages, so you can check for outages any time. Compare plans or check availability.

Question 2

What is fiber internet, and how is it different from cable and Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

Fiber internet sends data as pulses of light through thin glass cables. Cable internet uses coaxial copper lines that may share capacity with nearby customers. Fiber is the connection that brings internet into your home, while Wi-Fi is how your devices connect wirelessly to your gateway inside it. Read more about what fiber internet is and how fiber compares with cable, then check availability.

Question 3

What is the difference between AT&T Fiber and DSL or U-verse?

Accepted Answer

Fiber internet uses light signals through fiber-optic cables to deliver fast, consistent speeds, while DSL runs over phone lines and can be slower and less consistent. AT&T no longer offers DSL service. If you have or are looking for U-verse internet, you may be able to upgrade to AT&T Fiber where it is available, so check your address or read about AT&T DSL service.

Question 4

Does AT&T Fiber have equal upload and download speeds?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AT&T Fiber delivers equal upload and download speeds, so the speed you send data matches the speed you receive it. Many cable plans give far more capacity to downloads than uploads. Equal speeds help with video calls, cloud backups, sharing large files, live streaming and online gaming. Read about gigabit internet, see the fiber vs. cable comparison.

Question 5

What is hyper-gig internet?

Accepted Answer

Hyper-gig internet is the group of our fastest home internet plans. Hyper-gig plans also include AT&T All-Fi, a next-generation Wi-Fi experience for all your devices. Availability is limited, so check whether hyper-gig speeds are available at your address and run an internet speed test to see your current speeds. Read more about gigabit internet plans.

Question 6

What can I do with 5 GIG that I can't do with 1 GIG?

Accepted Answer

Where available, 5 GIG gives you about five times the speed of 1 GIG. The extra capacity helps with streaming 4K video, downloading large files and using many devices at once. Because Fiber has fast upload speeds too, creators and streamers also see faster uploads of large video files. 5 GIG is a strong fit for large households, remote work and competitive gaming. See AT&T Fiber internet for gaming or check multi-gig availability.

Question 7

Which AT&T Fiber speed tier is right for my household?

Accepted Answer

The right tier depends on the number of users, connected devices and activities in your home. Smaller households that browse, stream and video call may be well served by a lower tier. Families that stream, work, study and game at the same time may prefer a mid-range tier, and homes with many users, smart devices, heavy uploads or creators may prefer 1 GIG or higher. Learn more and see tiers on the internet plans page. Pricing and promotions vary by address, so check availability to see current pricing and offers for your address.

Question 8

How much does AT&T Fiber internet cost?

Accepted Answer

Your monthly rate depends on the plan you choose. AT&T Fiber has plans from 300 Mbps up to 5 GIG, and all plans are eligible for a monthly discount with AutoPay and paperless billing. There is no annual contract, no internet data caps and no gateway fees. Bundling with an eligible wireless plan may lower the price further. Compare plans on the internet plans page. Pricing and promotions vary by address, so check availability to see current pricing and offers for your address.

Question 9

What are the best deals on AT&T Fiber internet?

Accepted Answer

Bundling with an eligible AT&T wireless plan can save more each month. Households that qualify may also save through Access from AT&T, a low-cost home internet program for eligible households. See current AT&T deals and bundles. Pricing and promotions vary by address, so check availability to see current pricing and offers for your address.

Question 10

If I'm an existing wireless customer, or want to upgrade, what are the best offers on AT&T Fiber?

Accepted Answer

If you already have Fiber and want wireless, bundling can also reduce your wireless bill. Existing internet customers can check whether they can upgrade to Fiber through the upgrade my internet speed page. See current internet and wireless bundles. Question 11

Are there discounts for seniors or qualifying households?

Accepted Answer

Customers 55 and older can bundle unlimited wireless lines with home internet through the AT&T 55+ plan, with proof of eligibility. Eligible low-income households may qualify for Access from AT&T, a low-cost home internet program. Question 12

What is the process for AT&T Fiber installation, and how long will it take?

Accepted Answer

Depending on your address and whether fiber lines already run to your home, AT&T Fiber may be self-installed or may need a technician, even if you already have other AT&T services. When a technician is needed, installation typically takes four to six hours and can include replacing existing copper wiring with new fiber lines. You may need a new Wi-Fi gateway, and you can add Extended Wi-Fi Coverage. See the AT&T Fiber installation guide.

Question 13

Will AT&T Fiber be available in my neighborhood soon?

Accepted Answer

AT&T Fiber expansion is ongoing, and timing depends on resources, local permitting, access to property or community and environmental factors. AT&T reached 38.6 million total consumer and business locations with fiber as of its second-quarter 2026 report. Sometimes your neighbors are eligible but your home is not yet because your neighborhood is at the edge of our footprint. Sign up to be alerted when Fiber reaches your address, view the AT&T Fiber coverage map or check availability. If Fiber isn't available yet, AT&T Internet Air may be. Compare every option on the home internet overview.

Question 14

What equipment comes with AT&T Fiber, and can I use my own router?

Accepted Answer

AT&T Fiber customers get an AT&T Wi-Fi gateway, which is a router and modem in one, at no extra cost, with automatic software updates and repair or replacement of defective equipment for subscribers in good standing. You can connect your own router behind the AT&T gateway, but we recommend the AT&T-provided gateway for the full experience and support. Upgrades such as All-Fi Pro are available for an additional monthly charge. See AT&T All-Fi and Extended Wi-Fi Coverage.

Question 15

How secure is AT&T Fiber, and what security features are included?

Accepted Answer

All AT&T Fiber plans include standard AT&T ActiveArmor security features at no extra charge. ActiveArmor provides 24/7 proactive security that helps block known threats before they reach your devices, and you manage it in the AT&T Smart Home Manager app. Advanced features, such as VPN, enhanced browser security and threat monitoring, are available as an upgrade for an additional monthly charge. Review AT&T ActiveArmor internet security for current features.
